GBI Continues To Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting

An officer with the Adairsville Police Department fatally shot 29-year-old Charles Leon Johnson II after he started to flee by dragging the officer along the road.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Adairsville. 

The shooting occurred around 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, July 22 when an officer with the Adairsville Police Department stopped a "suspicious" vehicle on S.R. 140 at the northbound entrance ramp to Interstate 75, the GBI said in a press release.

After stopping the vehicle, the officer checked the driver's license of the man behind the wheel. The driver, identified as 29-year-old Charles Leon Johnson II, was wanted on a simple battery charge.

As the officer attempted to arrest Johnson, the suspect started to flee by dragging the officer along the road.

The officer shot the suspect once, killing him in the process, the GBI said. The officer did received medical attention, but his injuries did not require hospitalization.  

Adairsville interim Police Chief Arnold Gillman requested the GBI investigate the incident and once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the district attorney for the Cherokee Judicial Circuit for review, GBI spokesperson Sherry Lang said.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation continues.
