Cartersville Patch user Ryan Ruggiero captured these shots of the Saturday incident northbound between Emerson and Cartersville.
Updated 5 p.m. The owner of the 2003 Ford Windstar that was burned down to its frame told authorities she was driving northbound on Interstate 75 about 5 p.m. when the vehicle started having mechanical problems, according to the Bartow County Sheriff's Office report, attached. The van started smoking, so she pulled to the shoulder, but when she got out noticed sparks under the vehicle. It then burst into flames, partially in the roadway, according to the report. The frame and rear door panel were the only parts of the van left. Original Report Cartersville Patch user Ryan Ruggiero captured these photos of a Saturday car fire that shut down traffic northbound between Emerson and Cartersville. Updated Tuesday, 2 p.m. Authorities have identified the deceased as Shannon Larry Chumbler, 37, of Cumming. Wright said troopers continue the investigation, but have no new leads in the case. Original Report A stop early this morning to check an abandoned car on Interstate 75 led to the discovery of a body that had been struck by several vehicles, Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said. The Bartow County Sheriff's Office deputy about 1:35 a.m. pulled to the side of I-75 northbound near Glade Road in Acworth and saw the body in a travel lane. Authorities say oncoming traffic had hit the person multiple times, but it also appears he or she was in a travel lane on initial impact. Investigators believe the first vehicle to strike the…

To the Editor, The battle over the Georgia Department of Transportation’s proposed route (Route D-VE) for the costly 411 Connector is widely known by most residents in Bartow and Floyd counties. However, most are not aware of the fact that local officials and leaders have been promising motorists the direct connection to I-75 since 1963. Readers also might be interested to learn in the 1960s and 1970s that Rome and Floyd County were fiercely opposed to the state’s selected, eastern alignment of I-75 through Bartow County. This final section of I-75 in Georgia was delayed for several years because Rome wanted a more westerly route, as it would bring the interstate west of Cartersville and closer to the city. The arguments made by Rome’s …

A local man says it wasn't that long ago when the state highway department favored a shorter and cheaper route for Interstate 75.

Dear Editor, A certain group said in the local media, “We favor this route because it is 2.5 miles shorter and would result in lower construction costs.” Additionally, they claimed the route was “the most economical in terms of right-of-way, cost per year based on the facility’s lifespan and savings to motorists who will be using it.” Do you know who I am talking about? It was the state highway department (now commonly referred to as the Georgia Department of Transportation) when they fought tooth and nail in the 1960s and 1970s against the city of Rome, Floyd County and conservationists for the eastern route of I-75. How times have changed. Now, GDOT is proposing to build a route for the US 411 Connector that is 2.5 miles longer, costs …

About 1:30 p.m., a patrol deputy spotted Gann driving his red Mercury Sable in Acworth on Arrington Road and attempted to stop him. Gann allegedly fled in his vehicle and a chase ensued. Bartow County Sheriff’s Office investigators hope someone knows something about a rash of incidents in which vehicles traveling Interstate 75 just north of Acworth were hit with objects from an overpass. The Criminal Investigation Division is seeking help from the public in identifying the person or people throwing items from the Groover’s Landing Road bridge into the path of and onto passing cars. According to Sheriff Clark Millsap, three motorists have reported similar incidents at the overpass since last month. In a press release, Millsap said an unknown object was thrown from the bridge and struck the windshield of a tractor-trailer Dec. 23.
