About 67 percent of Bartow County high school students graduated within four years in 2012, according to new figures the Georiga Department of Education released this week. The 2013 'U.S. News & World Report' Best High Schools ranks CHS as No. 31 in Georgia and No. 1,590 nationally.
Cartersville High School is one of the best across the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report, which analyzed 21,035 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia for its 2013 Best High Schools rankings. The rankings are based on "the key principles that a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college-bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators," according to U.S. News & World Report. The first Purple Hurricane to sign on to play ball at Georgia Highlands College is Ty Fowler, according to an @GHCBaseball post on Twitter. The Cartersville High School student made it official early today, on National Signing Day—the first day a high school senior can sign a binding letter of intent for college sports. Georgia Highlands began its sports program in 2011, and hired a head baseball coach last year. Recruits for the 2013-2014 team, who appeared at a ceremonial January signing, include three other Cartersville natives, each of whom attends Woodland High School—John Hood, Camden McGill and Luke Patterson. The Cartersville City Schools board upheld the termination of Sean McDermott, a math teacher employed by the system since August, who is the subject of a police investigation.

Updated 3:45 p.m. Principal Steven Butler told police he received a complaint Thursday about 10:30 a.m. from a female student, who is a juvenile and said she had been inappropriately touched by a male teacher, according to the CPD incident report, attached to this article. Butler notified police Friday morning about 9:30 that the girl had reported "several occasions" of inappropriate touching by the teacher that she said occurred during class on campus at the high school. Capt. Mark Camp said the juvenile girl is age 16 or younger. A Cartersville High School student designed the poster for this year's Great Lake Allatoona Cleanup, which will be distributed in the three counties surrounding the lake to promote the environmental and educational effort. Evan Lanham topped a field of 12 designs with his lakeside view of pine trees and shoreline. Students instructed in Graphic Design by Valerie Webb competed in the poster design contest with four finalists. "The committee decided that the image and message of Evan's poster most closely represented the message that the Great Lake Allatoona Cleanup wants to convey: to recognize the beauty and value of the lake and to educate the community about environmental stewardship," member Carole Miller said.
