Woodland High Students Earn Musical Theater Honors

The school's production of "All Shook Up" received several honorable mentions in the Georgia High School Musical Theater Awards.

Students at Woodland High School earned several honorable mentions in the Georgia High School Musical Theater Awards, the Shuler Hensley Awards (GHSMTA) celebrating excellence in high school musical theater.  In this fifth anniversary year a total of 50 high schools from throughout the state are participating. The Woodland Fine Arts Academy's Performing Arts division presented its version of "All Shook Up" for the competition. The Honorable Mentions received were for: The Awards are fashioned after Broadway’s Tony Awards beginning with a glamorous red carpet event at 6 p.m. and the curtain will rise at 7:30 p.m. The awards will air on ME-TV, WSB-TV’s digital channel and can be viewed on Channel 248 on Comcast and 127 on Charter. Bartow Students Receive Scholarships

Two local students received the Comcast Foundation's Leaders and Achievers 2012 scholarships.

A Bartow County residents is among 83 Georgia students to receive one of the Comcast Foundation's Leaders and Achievers 2012 scholarships. Woodland High School student Sierra Carson of Acworth and Cass High School student Charlotte Frady of Cartersville were the only local students to receive the scholarships. "Comcast is delighted to again award scholarships to Georgia’s best and brightest high school seniors who exemplify what it means to be a leader," said Andy Macke, vice president of government and community affairs for Comcast’s Big South region. Contestants Sought for Miss Georgia USA, Miss Georgia Teen USA Pageants

The pageant will be held in Cartersville in November.

Applications are being accepted from young women throughout the state who would like to compete in this year’s Miss Georgia USA and Teen USA Pageants. Applications for the pageant can be found on www.missgeorgiausa.com under the “Apply Now” section. Cartersville will host the 2013 Miss Georgia USA and Miss Georgia Teen USA Pageants at the Woodland Performing Arts Center Nov. 15-17. Chamber Endorses Pageant Sponsorships

Miss Georgia USA and Miss Georgia Teen USA pageants boost the local economy by more than $200,000 each year.

The local Chamber of Commerce has endorsed community sponsorships for the Miss Georgia USA and Miss Georgia Teen USA pageants set for Nov. 15 to 17 at Woodland High School's Performing Arts Center, Cartersville-Bartow County Convention & Visitors Bureau announced. “Our board of directors overwhelming endorsed the economic value of the pageants and we look forward to the opportunity to team with the CVB on this effort,” Chamber President and CEO Joe Frank Harris Jr said in a press release. No Local Schools Rank in State, Nation

No Bartow County high schools received state or national rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

No local high schools received state or national rankings, according to a report on top high schools released this week by U.S. News & World Report. The 2012 ratings include data on close to 22,000 high schools in the United States. The only state not included is Nebraska, which did not provide enough data. Schools were analyzed on how well students performed on state assessments. Locally, Cartersville High School received a 19.4 on the college readiness index. Cass High School had a 14.5, and Woodland High School received a 10.6. Bartow County's fourth high school, Adairsville, received an 11.1 on the index. Comparatively, Savannah Arts Academy, which is ranked No. 1 in Georgia and No. 87 in the nation, received a 76.4 on the college …

It is sad, as I know several very good teachers in the county. I wonder how Excel Academy would score? It seems most of the later half of the year is spend teaching the children how to take a test instead of moving forward in the curriculum.
