Sound Off: School Board Members Address Website, Accusations

Video of last night's Bartow County school board meeting captured Vice Chairman Angie Cornett and Wanda Cagle Gray's comments about bartowforabetterboe.com.

Conflict between Bartow County Schools board members continued with Monday's business session, which followed the publication of a new website, bartowforabetterboe.com BartowPolitics.com captured video of Vice Chairman and District 3 rep Angie Cornett responding to allegations she violated ethical standards in a recorded phone call and text messages, both published on the new website also addressed by Post 4 representative Wanda Cagle Gray. A full-page ad in Sunday's The Daily Tribune News indicates bartowforabetterboe.com is funded by Taxpayers for an Ethical Bartow County, according to the newspaper, which has more from an Excel Christian Academy parent on the private school's use of county school facilities. While Cornett said personal …

Sound Off: Questions Linger for School Board

Residents aren't satisfied with Bartow County Schools officials' response to questions surrounding a recent SACS complaint and voter fraud lawsuit.

Constituents who again questioned the Bartow County school board about a recent Southern Association of Colleges and Schools complaint and the previous appointment of Post 5 representative Anna Sullivan were met with an answer from Superintendent John Harper that seems to indicate continued dissension. The Monday work session follows a SACS recommendation the school system take action to promote a functional and cohesive board and a lawsuit disputing legality of Sullivan’s appointment. It wasn't resolved prior to the July 31 primary election, in which Sullivan won the contested seat. Harper said he feels "personal disagreements between board members" in recent months are "damaging to the school system," BartowPolitics.com reports. He …

Ms Gray continues to represent her district by asking question that have been asked by her constituents. How is this causing disharmony...unless, as Ed Hornyak says, something is amiss? I do hope the text msgs that Ms. Gray refers to in her address, will shed some light on what other board members have said. I think they will!!! I don't believe she makes empty statements.   more ›

SACS to School Board: 'Work in a Spirit of Harmony and Cooperation'

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools found no cause for further action following Bartow Board of Education District 4 representative Wanda Cagle Gray's compliant and the school system's response.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has found no cause for further action on a complaint filed by Bartow school board member Wanda Cagle Gray, who represents District 4. But, the accrediting body for schools in Georgia and 10 other states recommended the school system take action to promote a functional and cohesive board focused on the best interests of students, according to a copy of the letter, which was published on BartowPolitics.com and is attached to this article. Gray told Cartersville Patch in June that concerns brought to her by several of her constituents spurred her to file the complaint against her fellow board members, which was based on the appearance of wrong doing. Two of Gray’s four concerns centered around …

School Board Member Splits with Party

Current District 4 representative on the Bartow County school board Wanda Cagle Gray says she will qualify as an independent for re-election.

Following Republican Fred Kittle's announcement and qualification for the District 4 seat on the Bartow County school board, current representative Wanda Cagle Gray announced she will seek re-election as an independent. Gray, who was outspoken during the most recent school board meeting, released this statement: As a conservative I have made decisions based on principle all of my adult life and not what is really best for me. With that being said I will be running for re-election to the Bartow County Board of Education, District 4, as an independent candidate. I will be qualifying in July. Why? The majority of school boards throughout the State of Georgia including our local city board are non-partisan boards. School boards do not vote …

Watch: School Board Fireworks

A Kingston Elementary personnel action brought a heated exchange between chairman Davis Nelson and District 4 representative Wanda Cagle Gray and her husband.

Tempers flared over a personnel action by the Bartow County school board at Monday night's business meeting, and Cartersville UNCUT captured the heated conversation that followed a big show of support for the Kingston Elementary School administrator apparently accused of intimidation. An indication of continuing division between board members, chairman Davis Nelson called District 4 representative Wanda Cagle Gray out of order in an intense exchange. That led to an outburst from the crowd. "I'm her husband and you ain't going to talk to my wife that way, period."

Kittle a School Board Contender

Euharlee resident and Cartersville businessman Fred Kittle says he'll qualify for the District 4 seat currently held by Wanda Cagle Gray.

Following fireworks at a Bartow school board meeting, former Chamber of Commerce chairman and current county GOP first vice chair Fred Kittle announced a run for the District 4 seat currently held by Wanda Cagle Gray. In a press release, Kittle said he'll qualify as a Republican on Wednesday, the first day of the three-day qualifying period. It's unclear if Gray will seek another term, but those fireworks indicate the divide between her and other board members continues. Kittle didn't address the issue or other concerns facing the school board, such as budget cuts and a property tax hike proposal. "I believe I will be a positive and innovative member of the school board," Kittle said in the release. "I look forward to serving the citizens …

Bartow Schools Conduct Second Ground Survey for Emerson Elementary

The school system also announces that open enrollment for health insurance benefits will begin in October.

During the Bartow County Board of Education work session Monday, the board discussed several of the system’s new school construction projects, with particular interest focused on the site planned for the new Emerson Elementary School. Currently, the system awaits the results for a second geotechnical survey of the land and soil of the proposed Emerson Elementary, and received the “blow report” on the site Monday. Superintendent John Harper said the system decided to conduct a second survey, “after something came back on the [first] report to be careful of the site.” “We don’t want to put a school there if it’s not in good shape,” added Harper. Harper said the new school site in Emerson had previously been surface mined, and that any …
