Stargaze at Tellus on National Astronomy Day

Come out Saturday and see why the stars have fascinated man since the dawn of time.

Tellus Science Museum on Saturday will celebrate National Astronomy Day.  This will be the third year in a row that Tellus has planned activities in conjunction with this nationally recognized day.  Originally conceived in California in 1973 by Doug Berger, then president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California, National Astronomy Day was meant to bring the world of astronomy closer to the average person. Berger decided that instead of enticing people to travel long distances to visit an observatory, he would setup telescopes at busy, urban locations like street corners, shopping malls and parks, to bring the world of astronomy closer to them. Curious George to Appear in Cartersville

The famous monkey will be part of Friday's Family Science Night at Tellus Science Night.

Tellus Science Museum holds Family Science Night about four times a year, but Friday's event is set to have a special guest — Curious George. “Visitors of all ages are really looking forward to meeting him," said Joe Schulman, Marketing director. "His appearance is just one of many reasons for families to come out to Tellus for an evening of fun. "Family Science Night is a great way to kick off the weekend in a fun way that is also engaging and educational." Tellus Records Earthquakes Around the Globe

The local museum offers a unique look at the science behind earthquakes.

Ever feel a rumbling below your feet while walking around Cartersville? Me either, but apparently it’s there, according to the Tellus Science Museum. They’ve adopted a seismograph courtesy of Georgia Tech, and are now one of many locations using seismograph technology to track earthquakes not just here in Georgia, but all over the world. What need is there for earthquake monitoring in Cartersville, a place not generally known for serious earthquake activity? Plenty, according to Julian Gray, curator of the museum. “Everything associated with this technology is purely research driven," she said. Looking for things to do with the kids? Cartersville Patch has you covered! For a weekly activity that’s fun and free, bring your kids to Cartersville Public Library. The library offers interactive activities for kids of all ages. Parents and caregivers are invited to participate with their children in age-appropriate programs of songs, stories, rhymes, games and crafts.  The weekly schedule is as follows: "The Spencers: Theatre of Illusion," a magic and illusion act, is performing at The Grand Theatre on Feb. 5.
