Swheat Market Celebrates 7 Years

Kari Hodge says that owning the downtown Cartersville restaurant is the most rewarding thing she's ever done.

In 2008, Swheat Market owner Kari Hodge didn’t think her business in downtown Cartersville would last. The economic downturn forced her to whittle her staff down to three, including herself, and the restaurant was serving only lunch. “I was breathing through a straw under water in 2008,” Hodge said. “I really didn’t think I was going to make it.” But the restaurant survived, and next week it will celebrate seven years in business. That’s something Hodge said she still thinks is unreal. Public relations, a good staff and realistic expectations about not being an immediate hit are what she credits to her success. Hodge said it takes two to four years to make a business successful in Cartersville. “I don’t care what you do, you can’t do it …

Candlelit Dinners at Waffle House

One of the chain's Cartersville locations is offering romantic dinners, including white tablecloth service, on Valentine's Day.

In an upscale twist on "scattered, smothered and covered," a Cartersville location is one of more than 110 Waffle House restaurants set to serve romantic, Valentine's Day dinners. By reservation only, the special dinners are all about the atmosphere. In candlelight and dim lighting, meals will be served on white tablecloths with cloth napkins and alcohol-free champagne, TIME Moneyland reports. "The atmosphere will be more of 5-star, sit-down and less fast production, Waffle House,” Waffle House Area Director Chris Parrott told WALB. It's a first for the Waffle House at 1355 Joe Frank Harris Parkway in Cartersville, but the chain's fifth year offering up romance with a special menu at select locations, including more than 20 Georgia …

From the Eyes of the Purple Hurricanes

Cheap Eats: Lunch in Cartersville

For those on a budget, a Cartersville High School student provides dining suggestions.

Sitting inside, the air stifling, walls barren, the 24 high school seniors are convinced they are sitting in their own personal level of hell, created by Dante himself, when in actuality, their “prison” holds nothing more than a few desks, some dusty text books and a grumpy teacher well overdue for his planning period. Moments later, the loud ringing of the bell sends the seniors flying to the parking lot, ready for lunch. This hunger rampage comes to a startling halt when a thought suddenly crosses one student’s mind. “I’m broke and only have a few bucks for lunch.” Is it possible in Cartersville to dine for a few dollars or is the cafeteria suddenly sounding like a more lucrative option? When given the option to eat in the cafeteria or …

Employees Suspected in Pizza Hut Theft

A district manager told Cartersville police about $5,000 in suspicious debit card transactions occurred since October.

Various prepaid debit card transactions including large tip amounts tipped off the district manager of a Pizza Hut in Cartersville that employees may be responsible for an aggregate $5,000 theft. The area manager told Cartersville police he noticed a trickle of unusually high tips begin in October, and found that six employees had obtained unidentifiable debit cards, to which they charged small, fraudulent purchases and added large tips. The six, including a general manager, two managers and three employees, then retrieved cash from the store in the amount of those exorbitant tips, he added. While the transactions initially processed, it wasn't until months later the restaurant learned there was no money on the prepaid cards. When …

It's gotta be said: the manager had a right to be suspicious when he noticed large tips. I've been to this place numerous times and can't remember a single instance a large tip was warranted.   more ›
