Patch, AOL Send Hurricane Sandy Relief Trucks to Long Island, New Jersey

Employees help out, and you can, too.

It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate. "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who are watching and wishing they could help more. So for us AOLers and Patchers…

Locals Help with Sandy Relief

Cartersville Electric sent a crew to New Jersey and the Anheuser-Busch plant is producing cans of emergency drinking water for victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Locals are pitching in to help those affected by Superstorm Sandy. Cartersville Electric System teamed up with work crews from Albany, Crisp County and LaFayette to send help following a request from First Energy in New Jersey, according to a city press release. The team, including local employees Tim Shepherd, Greg Sharpton, Tim Storey, Taylor White, Rocky Diddle, Matt Haynes and Stuart Lee, departed Saturday morning.  Cartersville’s Anheuser-Busch plant is doing its part by producing cans of emergency drinking water—instead of cans of beer—for Sandy victims and relief workers, WSB-TV reports. This week, AB will begin packaging 44,000 cases of emergency drinking water, or 1,056,000 cans, for residents impacted by Sandy and other natural …

How Will Hurricane Sandy Affect Holiday Travel Plans?

With damage to airports and flooding rampant, Holiday travel could be difficult this year.

It's safe to say that the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy will be felt for a long time up and down the Eastern Seaboard. One of the most immediate effects of the storm may be difficulties in holiday travel arising from flood and storm damage. Marci Zied of Canton's A Love of Travel travel agency doesn't see too many problems for holiday travelers as a result of Hurricane Sandy; in fact, she is leaving for Spain on Friday through New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. "We were worried because JFK was closed earlier, but it will be open to international flights by the time we leave," she said. "By Thanksgiving it shouldn't be an issue." Zied did say that New York's LaGuardia Airport, which handles more domestic flights, is closed due…

Cartersville Volunteers Head to Help with Sandy Disaster

Weyland Billingsley and Charlie Pitchford, both American Red Cross disaster volunteers, deployed over the weekend to Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Princeton, N.J., respectively.

Two Cartersville residents are among the more than 1,300 disaster workers deployed to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Weyland Billingsley and Charlie Pitchford, both American Red Cross disaster volunteers, deployed over the weekend to Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Princeton, N.J., respectively. Billingsley will serve as government liaison in the wake of the Category 1 hurricane that Monday night made landfall in Atlantic City, N.J. The first hurricane in recorded history to strike the Jersey Shore—a massive storm packing winds up to 97 mph—has shut down the state's infrastructure, knocked out power to hundreds of thousands, and left an untold number of people stranded by flooding. Thousands along Connecticut's shoreline may be trapped by …
