Tips to Keep Wildlife Outside as Winter Approaches

Local wildlife are looking for a warm environment to call home, so you should know the telltale signs of unwanted guests that can cause damage while nesting and transmit diseases.

Leaves are changing and the air is cooling sending many folks indoors, but they’re not the only ones eager to enjoy the cozy comforts of home through the winter months. Local wildlife will also be looking for a warm environment to call home and it’s important for homeowners to know the telltale signs of a pesky intruder as these unwanted guests can cause real damage while nesting and can also transmit diseases. Arrow Exterminators, a pest and termite control company that serves customers in several states and operates a Cartersville office, has several tips. Unusual noises in the attic or droppings found in pantries, along baseboards or in attics could indicate that roof rats, squirrels, bats or even raccoons may have settled-in.  The top …

Cartersville Kmart Set to Close

Liquidation sales start in November and the store with about 75 employees closes in January.

While it survived an earlier round of store closings, which affected nearby Athens, Buford and Douglasville locations, the Kmart in Cartersville is set to close in January. The local store employs 74, mostly part-timers, who will receive severance, although some may fill open positions in other stores, reports The Daily Tribune News. "We made a business decision not to renew the lease," spokesman Chris Brathwaite told the newspaper. Liquidation sales begin next month and the facility located in an already largely vacant shopping center is set Jan. 22 to shut its doors, according to the newspaper and Cartersville UNCUT. Restaurants and shops, including an office supply store and Rite Aid, already have left Cartersville Crossing, the Main …

I agree with Kim and Lois, - raze the entire center and build entertainment facilities such as a bowling alley and skating rink. Other than our (beautiful) Carmike Cinema, there really is nothing to do in Cartersville since the old bowling alley and skating rink were torn down. We DON'T need anymore grocery stores, pharmacies, fast food, banks, or attorneys !   more ›

Speak Out: Last Year for Downtown Trick-or-Treat

Where should Cartersville and Bartow County children trick-or-treat—downtown, at strip malls, in neighborhoods, at church trunk-or-treats?

Thousands are expected to show for trick-or-treating in downtown Cartersville on Halloween, the final go for what has been an annual event for the Downtown Development Authority. Downtown establishments are set to welcome children dressed in Halloween costumes Oct. 31, from 3 to 5 p.m., packing the sidewalks and streets of the business district. "Not only is [trick-or-treating] a safety concern of the DDA and city of Cartersville, it is a significant economic drain on the DDA, which is a nonprofit organization," DDA Manager Tara Currier said in a statement. "It is unclear exactly how this event came to fall under the DDA, whose overarching mission is to enhance the economic prosperity and vitality of the downtown business district, [to] …

My older son was 11 mos old in Aug of 1998 when we moved to Cartersville. He just turned 15 last month. My youngest child just turned 6 last month and hasn't missed a downtown trick-or-treat yet. I can't believe that $1,000 is being begrudged to the children and this wonderful small town tradition. Surely, people spend money as they trick-or-treat--purchase drinks, snacks, meals? I always order a…   more ›

Booth Museum Opens Downtown Gallery

An effort to highlight the talents of local and regional artists, Booth Western Art Museum's Downtown Gallery in Cartersville, which will sell artwork, opens Friday.

An effort to help highlight the talents of local and regional artists and move Cartersville towards becoming a more art-focused community, Booth Western Art Museum's Downtown Gallery is set to open Friday and Saturday with receptions.   "We saw a need to have a space for talented artists associated with the Booth to sell their work," Executive Director Seth Hopkins said in a statement. "We also wanted a larger space to showcase the reproductions of artwork in the Booth collection we have for sale.  "Cartersville is becoming a destination for art experiences and Downtown Gallery gives them an opportunity to take art home with them." CRBI Takes Aim at Off-Road Vehicles in Rivers

Bartow County authorities cited a group near Cartersville for trespassing and operating vehicles in a river under a new and little-known Georgia law.

A group of off-road-vehicle users got a rude awakening earlier this month when Bartow County Sheriff’s Office deputies and a Georgia Department of Natural Resources ranger issued them citations for trespassing on private property and operating their vehicles in the Etowah River, according to a Coosa River Basin Initiative press release. The citations came near the end of a summer in which off-road vehicle users at the U.S. Highway 411 bridge between Cartersville and Rome have become a common sight, angering property owners as well as paddlers and anglers using the river. A new and little-known Georgia statute signed by Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2010 prohibits the operation of motor vehicles in rivers and streams, even when dry. O.C.G.A. § 40-7-…

It is all good. I am against treaspassing but maybe the state should make more place for people with 4wheelers and jeeps a place to ride. Tennessee, Alabama and other states have state funded and ran ohv parks that work and bring out of state money into the local communities. Tennessee even has a ohv tag to help pay for it.   more ›

Google Street View Car: Invasion of Privacy?

Have you seen the car with cameras mapping Cartersville streets? Do you have privacy concerns about the images and data it's collecting?

Twice this week, I spotted a Google Street View car in Cartersville. My first encounter with the small car sporting cameras perched on a pole, which was on Grassdale Road, stirred my interest in the technology used to capture 360-degree panoramic views of streets, roads and highways on seven continents. First started in 2007 as an experiment, the latest Google car takes photos with up to 15 lenses and has motion sensors and lasers to track its position and determine distances. Google's driverless car uses that Street View data and artificial-intelligence software that can sense objects near the car and mimic driving decisions made by humans, according to a New York Times report. This week, California became the latest state to allow …
