What Would You Do To Improve in Cartersville in 2013?

If you could make a New Year's resolution for Cartersville or Bartow County, what would it be?

More than 45 percent of Americans make a resolution every year, according to statisticbrain.com. Some people vow to live a healthier lifestyle, others promise to spend more time with family, and many say they will try to save money. As millions of Americans make resolutions to improve their lives, what could we do right here in Cartersville and Bartow County to make it an even better place to live? City and county officials, along with the local Chamber of Commerce, say they're focused on creating jobs. Last month, voestalpine broke ground on a $62 million auto parts manufacturing plant expected to create more than 200 jobs in an industrial park that sat vacant for some time and was refinanced with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax …

Of primary importance for Patch is to stop always featuring the following in the subject line: Meth, DUI, Child Abuse, Rape, Sexual Misconduct. With the repetitive nature of your posts it makes Cartersville seem like the very dregs of society for the entire nation. It's so depressing. Because of this, I neglected to even read some of your posts for awhile and missed that Colin Firth was in …   more ›

Nearby Dallas Home Wins Deck the House Contest, $100,000 for Paulding County Schools

After thousands of votes from across the country, Joseph Felix's home was crowned the best decked house in the country and the winner of $100,000 for local schools.

In this year's Deck the House contest, the second time was the charm. Joseph Felix's home in nearby Dallas outshined the other 24 finalists to win the 2012 Deck the House contest and $100,000 for neighboring Paulding County Schools. After placing second in the nationwide voting in the 2011 contest, the Felix home received nearly 11,000 votes this year to finally win Deck the House. The home, with 100,000 computer animated holiday lights choreographed to Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You," received about 300 more votes than a home in Coventry, R.I., which finished in second place.  Judging by the 80 comments on the Felixes' Deck the House submission, visiting the home has become a holiday tradition in Paulding County. Many …

For at least 4,000 years, we've been celebrating the start of each new year, according to the History Channel. We've settled calendar problems, set Jan. 1 as New Year's Day and nowadays many begin celebrating on the eve of the New Year, Dec. 31. Around the world and across the country, revelers enjoy food and drink and engage in various traditions, all with the hope for good luck in the coming year. People bolt down grapes to symbolize their hopes for the months ahead in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, according to the History Channel. In Sweden and Norway, they serve rice pudding with an almond hidden inside; it's said that whoever finds the nut can expect 12 months of good fortune. In America, perhaps the most iconic …

How to Keep Your New Year's Resolution

Five tips to help you keep your resolution.

Are you making a resolution this year? Do you want to lose weight, gain a new skill or organize your house? Whatever your resolution is, here are some tips to help you stick to it throughout the year. 1. Make it attainable. Be sure that your resolution is attainable. Sticking to your monthly budget is attainable—making a million dollars may not be. 2. Tell everyone. If you tell everyone about your resolution, you are more likely to keep it. If you want to quit smoking, you can even go as far as telling your friends that you'll give them $50 if they catch you lighting up. 3. Be specific. If you want to get fit in the new year, set a specific goal. For example, instead of saying you want to get fit, say you want to lose 10 pounds and tone …

Toast the 2013 New Year with a Bottle of Champagne

Choosing the appropriate sparkling wine for New Year's Eve can make you dizzy before the first sip. Here's a handy guide to the intoxicating world of bubbles on a budget.

The pop of the Champagne cork is as much a part of the New Year’s Eve soundtrack as "Auld Lang Syne" and fireworks. The tiny, tickling bubbles evoke celebratory moods. With so many sparkling wines to choose from, picking the best bottle can be daunting. Prices for sparkling wine range from less than $10 to more than $500 per bottle. Keep in mind that while you usually get what you pay for, there are some great options for those of us on a budget.  Large “negociant” champagne houses that purchase much of their fruit, such as Veuve Clicquot, Bollinger, Roederer, Taittinger, Perrier Jouet and Nicolas Feuillatte, dominate the market. However, in the last decade or so, Champagne from small growers has gained some traction with Champagne …

Once you’re free of debt and ready to grow your savings, you can look to financial services companies for investment advice, including banks (Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Cartersville's Century Bank), insurers (State Farm, Allstate and others) and brokers (Edward Jones, for example). Good luck! Tell us what you think in the comments, share your photos and videos, and don’t miss any of the local news you care about—subscribe to Cartersville Patch's …
