Each year fires during the holiday season claim the lives of more than 400 people; injure 1,650 more; and cause more than $990 million in damage, Cartersville Fire Department officials say. Simple life-saving steps by the United States Fire Administration could ensure a safe and happy holiday. By following some of the outlined precautionary tips, individuals can greatly reduce their chances of becoming a holiday fire casualty. A foot race down Main Street with participants dressed in their best holiday costumes is set to precede Cartersville's annual Christmas parade in 2012. Keeping with tradition, the Cartersville-Bartow County Exchange Club parade, the proceeds of which benefit local children's charities, is set for 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, the first Thursday of the month. New to the offering year is the Jingle Jog, a 1.4-mile foot race to benefit Advocates for Bartow's Children and help get the crowd ready for the main event. It's safe to say that the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy will be felt for a long time up and down the Eastern Seaboard. One of the most immediate effects of the storm may be difficulties in holiday travel arising from flood and storm damage. Marci Zied of Canton's A Love of Travel travel agency doesn't see too many problems for holiday travelers as a result of Hurricane Sandy; in fact, she is leaving for Spain on Friday through New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. "We were worried because JFK was closed earlier, but it will be open to international flights by the time we leave," she said.
