Visionary Plans Mini America Theme Park at LakePoint

Eric de Groot had the idea for a miniature educational theme park 10 years ago, and now envisions it at LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center near Cartersville in Bartow County.

Eric de Groot can be called many things, a humanitarian, visionary, even dreamer. All of those attributes seem to fit as one of his dreams moved closer to reality with LakePoint's groundbreaking. His plans are for Mini America, a miniature educational theme park at LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center just outside Cartersville in Emerson, which is expected to be the "biggest thing Bartow [County] has ever seen." de Groot, 54, a longtime Georgia resident and native of Amsterdam, Holland, was inspired by a miniature theme park in the Netherlands called Madurodam, a little walkable city of Holland history. "If America didn't exist the world would be totally different," he said. The Mini America concept was officially commended by the …

Cartersville Residents Cut Vacations

Rising gas prices and the economy are cited as factors by some residents who said they are forgoing their summer vacations this year.

Higher fuel prices and unstable job situations are forcing some Cartersville residents this year to forgo their usual summer vacations. Vickie Harris has gone to Tybee Island for her summer vacation for the last three years. But, with gas prices fluctuating between $3.59 and close to $4 a gallon, she just can’t swing the 4-hour trip this year. “Gas would probably be double what it usually is,” Harris said. A U.S. Travel Association survey found that higher gas prices are likely to affect more than half the leisure travelers who planned trips by car, USA Today reports. Nearly half said they'd take fewer trips, while other said they'd cut back on other spending and driver shorter distances. Harris said she and her husband have discussed …

Make Your Pick

Readers Choose Tellus for Favorite Getaway

The Cartersville science museum is your regional pick for a family-friendly place to spend time on a staycation.

It appears that when you want to get away without really going away, you stay in Cartersville. In this week’s regional Readers’ Choice survey of staycation destinations, three of the top four vote-getters are Cartersville sites: Tellus Science Museum, Pine Mountain Recreation Area and Booth Western Art Museum. And even though six of the 19 poll options are in Cartersville Patch, commenters complained about a couple of the Cartersville sites we left off the list. So it’s only fitting that this week’s Readers’ Choice for favorite staycation destination is in Cartersville: the Tellus museum. "A selection like this means a lot because we wouldn’t be doing what we do without the support of the community," said Joe Schulman, the museum's …

CVB Looks to Bring Tours

Group sales coordinator Louise Young Harris represented Cartersville and Bartow County’s tourism industry at the 30th-annual Travel South Showcase.

Convention and Visitors Bureau officials are working to attract tour groups, hosting a familiarization tour and planning to produce a custom itinerary for group tour buyers. Activities with the two tour companies have developed since group sales coordinator Louise Young Harris represented Cartersville and Bartow County’s tourism industry at the 30th-annual Travel South Showcase in Louisville, KY, early this month. The showcase was hosted by Travel South USA, which is based in Atlanta. As a result of her work, CVB has hosted a familiarization tour for a Chattanooga-based group tour buyer and is planning a custom itinerary for another tour company in June, according to a press release. Harris was one of 600 Showcase 2012 delegates. She met …
