Euharlee Gets $100K Grant for New Trail

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources grant will help fund about a mile-and-a-half of Phase II of the city's Village Historic Trail.

The city of Euharlee received a grant for a new, one-and-a-half mile trail, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. It award a total of $1.66 million to 16 recipients to fund trails around the state meant to provide the public with more places to walk, run, ride and paddle, according to the press release. "Our state's enthusiasm for hitting the trails and paddling the rivers is growing," Becky Kelley, director of the Division of Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites, said in the release. "These new grants will help lay more paths to family fun and outdoor exercise." The city of Euharlee received $100,000 grant for Phase II of its Village Historic Trail. First Cane Signs with Georgia Highlands Chargers Baseball

Ty Fowler is the first Cartersville High School student to sign with the local college's new baseball team.

The first Purple Hurricane to sign on to play ball at Georgia Highlands College is Ty Fowler, according to an @GHCBaseball post on Twitter. The Cartersville High School student made it official early today, on National Signing Day—the first day a high school senior can sign a binding letter of intent for college sports. Georgia Highlands began its sports program in 2011, and hired a head baseball coach last year. Recruits for the 2013-2014 team, who appeared at a ceremonial January signing, include three other Cartersville natives, each of whom attends Woodland High School—John Hood, Camden McGill and Luke Patterson. Meet Georgia Highlands' New Coaches

The Chargers' baseball and softball programs will be based at the Cartersville campus.

Georgia Highlands College is welcoming two new coaches to head the Chargers new baseball and softball programs, which will be headquartered at the Cartersville campus. At a Thursday press conference, Athletic Director Phil Gaffney introduced men's baseball coach Mike Marra and women’s softball coach Melissa Wood. Both say they expect their teams to play to win in every game, including the first season.  During this academic year, they'll recruit players for the first competitive team, which will begin competitive play in the spring of 2014. Wake Park Closes on Land at LakePoint

Construction of Terminus Wake Park at LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center is set to begin this fall, and the opening is expected in the spring.

Wake Park Atlanta, which in January announced plans to open a cable wakeboard park at LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center in Bartow County, closed this week on almost 20 acres of land. Developers say the innovative, multi-lake design at Terminus Wake Park will accommodate wake boarders of all skill levels. "The park’s signature will be an elaborate series of rails and obstacles," Austin Singleton, one of the principals with Terminus, said in a press release. "Many of the obstacles at the park will not be available anywhere else in the United States and some of the custom obstacles will be the first of their kind in the world." Bartow All-Star Team Wins State

Bartow County Recreation Department's eight and under girls' All-Star softball team won the Dizzy Dean State Championship.

The Bartow County Recreation Department's eight and under girls' All-Star softball team Monday in Chickamauga won the Dizzy Dean State Championship. 18 to 6. "These girls have been undefeated in the state tournament thus far," said Nicole Souderson Monday. "We are so proud of our girls. These tough young ladies have played in 105-plus degree weather and after 11 p.m. during this tournament. "Placing first in state, they have received a berth to the Dizzy Dean World Series in Mississippi in two weeks," said Souderson, whose daughter is Chloe, No. 12. "We are currently trying to raise money so these girls are able to go. They have worked so hard."
