Red Cross: Prepare for Nasty Winter Weather

The American Red Cross' Northwest Georgia chapter offers safety tips for your home and vehicle as the temperature drops.

As winter weather approaches parts of north Georgia, the American Red Cross is encouraging families and individuals to take steps now to prepare for hazardous conditions such as icing on roads and freezing temperatures. "Winter storms can be deceptive," Executive Director of Northwest Georgia Red Cross Jeffrey Putnam said in a release. The majority of winter-related deaths are caused by events related to the heavy snow fall, high winds and freezing rain that often accompany them. "People can become trapped at home without utilities or other services. Motorists can become stranded in their vehicles. Walking and driving can become dangerous. But people can stay safe if they listen to their local authorities and take action to get prepared …

The National Weather Service has now issued a winter weather warning that warns of snow accumulations and black ice.

Cartersville and Bartow County could see 2 to 4 inches of snow, according to a winter weather warning issued by the National Weather Service. In effect through 10 a.m. Friday, it covers Bartow, nearby Cherokee County and areas north of a line from Rome to Cartersville to Dawsonville and Cleveland. The previous winter weather advisory for the area is no longer in effect. Two to 4 inches of snow, and 5 inches in higher elevations, are possible as rain mixes with and changes to snow this afternoon and evening. Snow Day? Winter Weather Rolls in Today, Tonight

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for north Georgia, which warns of light snow and black ice from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning.

Snow is expected across north Georgia this afternoon and tonight, according to the National Weather Service's winter weather advisory, which goes into effect at 1 p.m. and replaces the previous winter storm watch. A "cold polar air mass" is expected to spread into north Georgia as widespread rain shifts south. Updated: Winter Storm Watch: An Inch of Snow Possible

A winter storm could switch widespread rain to snowflakes on Thursday, but little to no accumulations are expected in Cartersville and Bartow County, according The National Weather Service

Updated 8 p.m. NWS has updated its forecast for Cartersville and Bartow County—"new snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible" both Thursday and Thursday night. The forecast now calls for a low of 27. Bartow also is under a Flood Watch, as parts of north Georgia have gotten 3 to 6 inches of rain and can expect an 1 to 2 inches through Thursday evening. Snow, Accumulations Possible Thursday

Cartersville could get its first glimpse this winter of the white stuff as rain across north Georgia may turn to snow with the arrival of a deep cold air mass.

Cartersville and Bartow County could get the first snow of the winter and 2013 on Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. A strong low pressure system and ample Gulf moisture will meet, resulting in widespread rain and an associated deep cold air mass that will begin to spread across north and central Georgia on Thursday afternoon and evening, meteorologists say in a special weather statement issued today. As a result, rain could change over to snow across parts of north Georgia, including Bartow and other counties from Dade to Toombs.
