Pope Benedict XVI's resignation will go into effect on Feb. 28, and a successor should be named by Easter.
Pope Benedict XVI announced today he's resigning, effective Feb. 28, due to his health. Age 78 when he was elected pope in 2005, Benedict XVI, born in 1927 as Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger, is the 265th pope and served as such for 8 years. The last pope to resign was Gregory XII, in 1415. "I get asked, periodically, for local input when something 'Catholic' happens, such as the Pope´s resignation," said Rev. Andrew Pray, a worship pastor with West Ridge Church, which has a Cartersville location, was struck while cycling in Bartow County early Wednesday afternoon.
Updated 9:45 p.m. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Wednesday night reported that Pray was struck by a charter bus about 12:30 p.m. as he rode his bicycle along U.S. 41 in Emerson near Cartersville in Bartow County. Pray was taken by ambulance to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, the newspaper also reported, but did not survive. Many families in Bartow County are unable to supply basic paper and pencils for a child’s first day of school, not to mention new clothes or a haircut. Bartow Give a Kid a Chance is part of a national program designed to provide free assistance to children struggling in school. This summer, hundreds of volunteers, local churches, numerous nonprofits, both city and county school systems, United Way and the Employer Committee of the Department of Labor are assisting in this effort. “There are quite a few slots still available for children in the Bartow County and Cartersville school systems to register,” said Terry Terrell, chairman of this year’s event. Children who participate in West Ridge Church's Surge Camp choose one of four tracks for an entire week of camp—art, basketball, hip hop dance or martial arts. Surge is a week-long, evening summer camp for kids set to enter first through sixth grades in the fall. The camp offers coaching in various sports and instruction in the arts. "We gather in small and large groups to discover who God is and what He's done for us through a time full of music, video, creative Bible teaching and more," said Rebekah Warren in a release. "This will be a camp a child won't forget!" The camp is set for June 18 to 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. at West Ridge Church, but the deadline to register is June 10. The registration fee is $15 per child.
