Man Shot, Killed in Apparent Robbery

The 28-year-old Cartersville man, who was found at a MLK Jr. Drive car wash, had been "mudding" with family early Sunday

A local man was shot and killed last night in an apparent robbery and Cartersville police have no suspects. Chief Tommy Culpepper said in a news release officers were dispatched at 11:08 p.m. to the Sun-Glo Car Wash on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in response to a call about a man lying in the car wash next to a pickup truck. When they arrived, officers found Randal Statler Jr., 28, of Cartersville, who was deceased.  Authorities believe Statler, who appears to have been shot once, was the victim of a robbery. He apparently had been “mudding” earlier with family members and went to the car wash to clean his pickup truck. Investigators don't know how much, if any, money was taken from Statler. "We have had several officers and investigators…

Family of Boy, 13, Wants Another Look at Death Investigation

Robert Taylor III, 13, was an eighth-grader at Bartow's Woodland Middle School when he was shot and killed in Cartersville in what police called an accidental shooting involving another boy, 14.

The family of a local boy killed a few days after Christmas two years ago is asking the Bartow County Sheriff's Office to take another look at what authorities determined was an accidental shooting. Robert Harvell Taylor III, 13, then an eighth-grader at Bartow County Schools' Woodland Middle in Euharlee, died Dec. 29, 2010, at a friend's Freedom Drive home in Cartersville's Oakland Heights area, the Rome News-Tribune reported. Sheriff Clark Millsap at the time said Taylor, whose family and friends described him as a quiet, sweet boy with a love of baseball, was killed as the result of an accidental gunshot involving another young boy, whose name was not released, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. "We believe this was an …

Stabbing Becomes a Homicide Case

The 70-year-old victim of multiple stabs wounds died Thursday and the man accused of the related robbery and assaults also is charged with murder.

A man stabbed multiple times Sunday during what authorities called a home invasion-style robbery has died. James David Ayers, 70, who allegedly was attacked in his Cartersville home near a Highway 41 flea market and storage business, died Thursday at an area hospital, Sheriff Clark Millsap said in a news release. Sunday, he was taken to Floyd Medical Center in critical condition, and since had been hospitalized and treated for multiple stab wounds.  Bartow County Sheriff's Office deputies responding to the Sunday incident arrested Herbert Eberhardt Drews, 48, a Crown Inn resident accused of entering the Joe Frank Harris Parkway home shortly before 10 p.m., stealing money and attacking Ayers and another man.
