Two local organizations are encouraging community members to save the date for downtown Cartersville's first Hometown Christmas event. Cartersville Downtown Development Authority and Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce teamed to spearhead the Saturday, Dec. 8, event scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meant to encourage community residents to shop locally, both organizations are working to schedule a variety of entertainment throughout the downtown district including dance demonstrations, photo opportunities with Santa, choral performances and more. Unemployment in the county increased to 9.9 percent in January from a revised 9.7 percent in December.

Bartow County’s unemployment rate rose to 9.9 percent in January but was still down almost 2 percentage points from a year earlier, the Georgia Department of Labor reported today. And even the increase in January left the jobless rate lower than the preliminary rate from December. The Labor Department originally reported the December rate at 10.5 percent but revised that figure down to 9.7 percent. Along with the usual refinements that can move the jobless rate by a couple of tenths of a point, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the state department just conducted an annual benchmarking to improve the job data’s accuracy. The county's 10.5 percent unemployment in December was higher than November but sharply lower than a year earlier.
Bartow County ended 2011 with a rosier jobs picture despite a rise in the county’s unemployment rate in December. Almost 40 more Bartow residents were working at the end of December than in November, and almost 900 more had jobs than were employed a year earlier, according to preliminary figures the state Department of Labor reported Thursday. A total of 40,831 people in the county ended 2011 employed, while 4,812 people 16 and older were seeking jobs. Bartow’s unemployment rate increased to 10.5 percent from 10.3 percent in November only because the workforce grew. But the more important comparison is to a year ago, and the county’s rate fell more than a point from the final rate of 11.7 percent in December 2010. The local figures are not…
