Fill in the Blank

Vacancy Visions: Former Steins, Cafe

What should be in this historic building in downtown Cartersville? Tell us in the comments.

This historic, but longtime, largely vacant building in downtown Cartersville once housed Steins and later became Moon River Cafe and Brewery. What would you like to see in the old structure at 101 W. Main St. that in December was the scene of a multiple-alarm call for Cartersville fire crews? Help us fill in the blank. Tell us in the comments what should be there now.

LakePoint Details Plans for 5 Villages, Job Applications

The massive Emerson sports complex is set for The Miracle League, LakePoint Church and lake, outdoor adventure and medical research areas.

With a revamped website, LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center has released more details on plans for the Emerson development Commissioner Clarence Brown called "the biggest thing Bartow has seen," which developers now say will attract 4 million visitors a year and include 5 million square feet of commercial offerings. In its new Local Community section, LakePoint encourages its visitors to support Bartow businesses and offers a service to identify and find local establishments. Perhaps more important to the locals—because LakePoint is expected to bring thousands of jobs and become one of the largest employers in northwest Georgia—is the website's new Jobs tab. It says construction jobs related to the more than 1,400-acre mixed-use …

Sincerely hope that LakePoint becomes a reality but looking iffy right now. Delays like this are almost always due to financing problems. Will be a huge disappointment if the project craters.   more ›

The two-story, interior corridor hotel built in 1973 includes an outdoor pool, restaurant, meeting facilities, business area, fitness center and breakfast space. Sheriff: Pawn Regulation Needed to Track Stolen Property

The ordinance adopted by Commissioner Clarence Brown and effective May 1 requires dealers and brokers transmit electronic records to the Bartow County Sheriff's Office.

A new county ordinance will help investigators find stolen property, but cost pawn shops, pawnbrokers and precious metals dealers, who will be required to produce digital records of transactions. Commissioner Clarence Brown approved Bartow's Fair Business Practices Act, effective May 1, as requested by Sheriff Clark Millsap following investigators' "difficulty with tracking and recovering stolen items, which are often unwittingly accepted by pawnshops, secondhand dealers and precious metal dealers," the ordinance says. Via a Business Watch International database, the businesses will be required to submit to the Bartow County Sheriff's Office information on each transaction, including photos of the customer and items pawned or sold. That …

Gwinnett County has been doing this for years, I wonder if anyone asked if their crime has went down, if the rate of recovery on stolen property has increased, or if its just another CMA from a lazy law enforcement agency.   more ›

A total of 21 companies announced projects to invest a cumulative $207.5 million in the county, including 12 in Cartersville for 198 new jobs and a total $48 million investment.

With 722 permanent jobs created and plans for more than 950 construction jobs that either have or will come to fruition, 2011 was a good year for economic development in Bartow, according to an annual report. Highlights of the recent Cartersville-Bartow County Department of Economic Development update include the expansions or new investments of 19 manufacturers; Georgia Highlands College and its new student center now under construction; and "the biggest thing Bartow has ever seen," LakePoint's sports complex in Emerson, The Daily Tribune News reports. Frozen Yogurt Shop, TCBY, Set to Open

A company spokesman said the franchise with a local owner is slated to begin serving treats at the end of the month or in early April.

Following the recent openings of The Sweet Spot and City Swirl Frozen Yogurt, which ended an extended frozen-yogurt-shop drought in Cartersville, perhaps the country's most recognizable such dessert stop is set to open on the west side of town. Near Subway and West End Pharmacy, TCBY is set for 807 West Avenue in Westside Plaza. According to tcby.com, its two closest yogurt shops are on Roswell Road in Marietta and Atlanta. A local person owns the franchise store, one of more than 600 TCBY locations worldwide, according to spokesman Christy Olliff. She offered more information on the Salt Lake City-based company owned by Mrs. Fields Famous Brands. Do you remember the former TCBY shop that was in the Kmart shopping center? Did you miss it …
