The man behind a bomb threat that put Carmike locations in Cartersville and other parts of metro Atlanta on alert last Friday has been identified, the spokesman for the Columbus movie chain said in a one-sentence statement. "The FBI has identified the person responsible for the bomb threats that occurred last Friday, August 17, 2012 involving Carmike Cinemas and believes he is no longer a threat," Carmike spokesman Terrell Mayton said Thursday. The statement did not mention if the suspect had been arrested. And the FBI did not offer additional details beyond a short statement of its own. Only two employees and no customers were inside Carmike Cinemas in Cartersville this morning when a bomb threat led to evacuations and searches of several movie theaters, Bartow County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jonathan Rogers said. Company officials asked local authorities to conduct a search after Carmike's corporate offices in Columbus, GA, received what Rogers called a "non-specific threat." "It didn't include a location," Rogers said. "So they didn't know where the bombs could be." Nothing suspicious was found in the Cartersville theater following the 9 a.m. threat, Rogers added. Stores in the shopping center on East Main Street where The Dollar Tree is located were evacuated.
A spokesman for the Cartersville Police Department said that a bomb threat being investigated earlier tonight at The Dollar Tree on East Main Street appears to have been a hoax. Lt. Mark Camp said that words containing the threat were found written on a wall in a restroom at the store but that nothing was found during the investigation. Stores in the shopping center were evacuated while officers werer on the scene.
