A Bartow County contract for a 1.6-mile road to connect the LakePoint Sporting Community and Town Center is expected to pave the way for economic development and job creation, according to the Ga. Department of Transporation (GDOT). The section of road will connect the center to the Georgia and U.S. highway system near Emerson. “I am proud that through our working relationship with local and state officials that we can support Bartow County’s efforts for job creation and economic development and help it meet its growing transportation needs,” Georgia DOT Commissioner Keith Golden said. January's devastating tornado may have inflated initial claims in that month.
Local unemployment rate figures won't be released for another week, but the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipped to 8.6 percent in February, the lowest rate since January 2009, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The rate was down one-tenth of a percentage point from 8.7 percent in January and six-tenths of a percentage point from 9.2 percent in February a year ago, the department announced in a release today. The story is a bit different in Bartow County, which had a much worse than normal January. With a devastating tornado wiping out some businesses and temporary closing others, the number of jobless people filing for initial unemployment claims was 1,679. The county's unemployment rate fell from 8.5 percent in October to 8.3 percent in November.
The unemployment rate for Bartow County took a slight dip last month to 8.3 percent, according to figures released from the Georgia Department of Labor. That is lower than October's unemployment rate of 8.5 percent, and significantly lower than November 2011 9.6 percent. Bartow's labor force rose slightly to 49,730 last month from 49,656 in October. November's labor force is also higher than November 2011 figure of 49,133. Bartow's unemployment rate is slightly higher than metro Atlanta's November unemployment rate of 8.0 percent. The region's rate is also slightly lower than its 8.2 percent rate in October and 8.9 percent in November 2011.
