Local Wins Statewide 4-H Award

Mary Clayton Gilbert's $1,000 Leadership in Action prize will help fund Advocates for Bartow's Children’s annual Every Child’s A Star talent show.

Former Bartow County and Georgia Distinguished Young Woman Mary Clayton Gilbert, who finished in the top ten in the national competition, has won the Georgia 4-H Leadership in Action award. But unlike the other awards, she won't use it attend the University of Oklahoma to study in the school of Musical Theater.  Gilbert this year served as volunteer chair of Advocates for Bartow's Children’s annual Every Child’s A Star talent show. The $1,000 award is earmarked for the 2013 production, and will be spent on a first-class microphone and sound system for the show and to help publicize its 20th anniversary. The competitive award was granted recently at the 70th-annual state 4-H Congress, and is sponsored by 4-H alumnus Jayson Dukes to …

New Cloverleaf Elementary Opens

Bartow school system officials Friday held a ribbon cutting for the $13 million facility on GA Highway 20 Spur in Cartersville.

Bartow County Schools officials Friday opened the system's newest facility, a relocated Cloverleaf Elementary School, following a ribbon cutting ceremony. The new school on GA 20 Spur in Cartersville, with a price tag of more than $13 million, has about 108,000 square feet and includes: classrooms to accommodate 800-plus students, a gym, a complete kitchen with a cafeteria and stage, a large library with a media center, a computer lab, an art studio and a health office. A playground and covered pavilion are on the campus grounds. “RA-LIN Project Manager, Brian Fritts, and Superintendent Joe Hester, did an outstanding job managing this project from start to finish," said Pankaj Daiya, the school system's director of Construction and …

Local Mom Shares Back-to-School Shopping Tips

Using coupons and buying in the off-season are part of Sheryl Davis' strategy.

For Bartow County resident Sheryl Davis, back-to-school shopping without breaking the bank means stocking up on supplies and clothing little-by-little throughout the year. Spending a few dollars here and there rather than plunking down hundreds at once makes it much easier, she said. “You can afford it if you spread it out,” said Davis, an avid couponer who carries her tote bag full of coupons with her to clip while she watches her two youngest children play. “My main thing is to do a little at a time, spread it all out.” But, spreading out purchases doesn’t mean spending full price—or even close to it. Davis buys the bulk of her children’s clothing in the off-season, purchasing a size larger than they currently wear so they’ll fit. For …

City School Bus Policy Changes

Cartersville Schools students will have assigned seats on school buses and a single, assigned bus stop beginning with the 2012-2013 year.

In a letter to parents, Cartersville City Schools officials say a comprehensive review of transportation policies and procedures led to changes due to several factors, including safety, liability and financial constraints. The changes, announced in May for the 2012-2013 school year, come after a 2011 tragedy at the school system's bus barn and as the system deals with budget cuts. About 4 p.m. on March 14, 2011, a school bus struck Garrett Black, 8, whose mother worked at the facility, as he was being dropped off by another bus. He was pronounced dead on the scene.  Starting this year, students will be assigned seats on school buses and given bus stop locations based on where they live. When school starts back, students who ride school …

I think it ridiculous that a student cannot be dropped off at a licensed home childcare provider OR to their PARENT(s) place of business. If the parent is at work, how are they supposed to get off everyday to go home to pick up their child? Where is common sense?! Going to family member's home may be the only type of childcare that the parent can afford.   more ›

State Sales Tax Holiday Set for Aug. 10-11

For the first time since 2009, Georgia shoppers will not have to pay state and local sales and use taxes on back-to-school items.

School won't be in session long in Bartow County and Cartersville schools when parents and caregivers across the state get a sales tax holiday. Georgia's sales tax holiday on back-to-school items is set for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10 and 11. The last time Georgia had a sales tax holiday was in 2009. According to the Department of Revenue, sales tax will be suspended on general school supplies with a sales price of less than $20 per item, clothing (including shoes) worth $100 or less, and computers and computer accessories with a sales price of $1,000 or less. The tax exemption excludes a number of items, such as jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, cellular devices, furniture, envelopes and more. See the .pdf attached for more details. The …

Businesses Team for School Supplies Drive

Harley-Davidson of Cartersville, Bruce Thompson Allstate and the Terry Reid Auto Group also are sponsoring a fundraiser for underprivileged students in Bartow County.

It's back to school time—supplies are in the stores, sports team practices start soon and the days get shorter. But for many in Bartow County, the excitement of an approaching school year adds stress due to the costs.  Harley-Davidson of Cartersville, Bruce Thompson Allstate and the Terry Reid Auto Group are teaming up to sponsor a Saturday, July 21, school supply drive and fundraiser for underprivileged students of Bartow County as a part of Harley-Davidson’s Community Day. Businessmen say it’s no secret many teachers spend their own money on school supplies for students who cannot afford them. Some local businesses heard of the problem and decided to do something about it. "When we heard of the great need, we knew that given the …

Teens to Collect School Supplies for Boys & Girls Club

Teen Actress Bella Thorne joins Staples and DoSomething.org to promote the Staples for Students National School Supply Drive.

DoSomething.org and Staples have teamed up with teen actress and recording artist Bella Thorne, for the fifth-annual Staples for Students national school supply drive, to help kids in need. The drive encourages local young people to collect school supplies and drop them off at their nearest Staples store through Sept. 15. All school supplies and donations will be given to the Boys & Girls Club of Bartow County to ensure they get into the hands of local disadvantaged youth just in time for the new school year. “I’m excited to help motivate fellow teens to make a difference in their communities,” Thorne said in a release. “There are so many kids in America who return to school without basic school supplies, and I’m thrilled to team up with …
