Bartow Students Bring Pellet Gun to School

Two Adairsville High School students, who were taken to the Bartow County jail in Cartersville, face criminal charges after one allegedly pointed the air soft pellet gun at two other students.

Two students this morning were jailed in connection with an air soft pellet gun one brought to school and the other allegedly pointed at two other students. The orange tip identifying it as an air soft pellet gun had been removed, authorities say. "It looked just like a Beretta handgun," Bartow Schools Police Chief Dan Knowles said. Adairsville High School Principal Bruce Mulkey notified parents in a letter, a copy of which parent Michelle Kahn emailed to Cartersville Patch. "I want to inform you of an unfortunate incident that occurred this morning in the cafeteria," he said, adding the gun was "actual size." Pretty ignorant to bring a fake gun to school when others were preparing for moments of silence and bell ringings in memory of the 20 students and six adults killed in last Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. They were lucky an armed officer did not see them pointing it at others or they may have been shot.   more ›

Adairsville Student Gets Mercer Scholarship

Shane Harper received the Penfield Academic Scholarship.

An Adairsville High School student has received a scholarship to attend Mercer University in Macon. Shane Harper received the Penfield Academic Scholarship, and university officials said the $23,000 annual academic scholarship is representative of Shane's high academic achievements. Harper is the son of Bartow County School Superintendent John Harper. He has been named an AHS Honor Graduate as well as an Etowah Foundation Academic Super Star. He also has been a member of the AHS JROTC Tiger Battalion for four years, currently serving as the Battalion Executive Officer and having led the JROTC Drill Team's Armed Platoon for two years. Donate Dresses, Accessories for Teens' 'Happy Ever After' Proms

In The Cinderella Project of Cartersville, Total Tan along with Glitzy Chiks and Melissa & Co. Salon hope to make local girls' prom dress dreams come true.

To give the "happily ever after" it says all girls deserve, a Cartersville tanning salon, with help from two other local businesses, is set to provide prom attire for young ladies unable to buy dresses and accessories. Total Tan—in the inaugural year of its The Cinderella Project of Cartersville, a nonprofit, volunteer operation based on donations—along with Glitzy Chiks and Melissa & Co. Salon want to assist Cartersville and Bartow County students, as well as girls in surrounding areas.  "This year, being our first, we anticipate providing over 150 high school girls...with the prom dress of their dreams, and next year we plan to double or triple the [number] of girls we help," Total Tan Salon Manager Melissa Latimer said in a press …

26 Local Wrestlers Head to State

Athletes from Cartersville and Bartow high schools will compete for state titles beginning Thursday and continuing through the weekend.

A number of local high school athletes are set to vie for state titles in the Georgia High School Association's Traditional Wrestling State Championships, set for Thursday to Saturday. Thirty wrestlers from four local high schools went to sectionals, but only 26 will continue to the state championship, according to The Daily Tribune News, which has more on the results of the various sectional competitions. Headed to the Arena at Gwinnett Center for eight rounds culminating in the finals, according to GHSA, are:  Tigers' Hayden Randolph (126) is an alternate, according to the newspaper. When most people think of swimming, their first thought is usually splashing in backyard pools, or swimming in a lake, or ocean, having a good time with their friends. However, competitive swimming has an entirely different connotation. Competitive swimming is a sport performed worldwide by individuals who possess devotion, talent, physical and mental capacity for the sport, and the rigorous training that the sport requires. For the past eight years, Woodland High School has provided a swim program for individuals who are interested in competing against county teams and other swim teams across the metro Atlanta region and northwest Georgia area. Adairsville Is Sole Football Survivor

The Tigers make the AA playoffs with a 9-1 record, while the seasons end for Cartersville, Cass and Woodland.

Adairsville is the lone school in Bartow County to make the Georgia High School Association football playoffs. The Tigers won a Region 7-AA play-in game on the road against Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, 24-14, Friday night to complete a 9-1 regular season and a playoff berth. Adairsville is the third seed from 7-AA and will play at Banks County from Region 8-AA in the first round of the GHSA AA playoffs. Banks County, in Homer, is 7-3 this year but enters the postseason on a two-game losing streak. One of those losses was a 34-17 defeat against East Hall on Oct. 28, according to Georgia Prep Country. Adairsville beat East Hall, 26-3, on Sept. 16. If Adairsville wins next week against Banks, its next game will be at Fitzgerald (9-1) or home …
