More than three years of planning and design, LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center has started the construction process to convert more than 1,200 acres of rocky terrain and rolling hills in Bartow County into a state-of-the-art, premier tournament vacation destination. The city of Euharlee received a grant for a new, one-and-a-half mile trail, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. It award a total of $1.66 million to 16 recipients to fund trails around the state meant to provide the public with more places to walk, run, ride and paddle, according to the press release. "Our state's enthusiasm for hitting the trails and paddling the rivers is growing," Becky Kelley, director of the Division of Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites, said in the release. The Atlanta Steeplechase, a nonprofit that benefits the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine and Zac Brown's Camp Southern Ground, is set for April 13 at Kingston Downs in Bartow and Floyd counties. Now in its 48th year, the daylong event expected to draw 20,000 people to the track off Highway 411 in between Rome and Cartersville, has some new offerings, including a raffle for the one-year lease of a new Hyundai Equus, the Budweiser Clydesdales, the PeopleChase 5K race and an air show, according to the press release. A Bartow County contract for a 1.6-mile road to connect the LakePoint Sporting Community and Town Center is expected to pave the way for economic development and job creation, according to the Ga. Department of Transporation (GDOT). The section of road will connect the center to the Georgia and U.S. highway system near Emerson. “I am proud that through our working relationship with local and state officials that we can support Bartow County’s efforts for job creation and economic development and help it meet its growing transportation needs,” Georgia DOT Commissioner Keith Golden said.
