In 1893, the city of Cartersville purchased privately owned Cartersville Water Works Company (Water Administration) and began the municipality's Water Department.
Its original supply was a spring near Thompson Weinman Dam on the north side of the Etowah River, and its facilities had two steam driven pumps, several miles of pipe and a 125,000-gallon water tank.
The department now takes water from Lake Allatoona Dam. The supply flows by gravity to the Clarence B. Walker Water Treatment Plant and is treated to drinking water quality by state-certified operators each day of the year.
