Amendment 1??????????

I WOULD LIKE TO READ THE CHARTER BEFORE I VOTE. IF IT IS NOT IN WRITING PRIOR TO THE BILL PASSING.

Amendment 1 supports a public charter school then why are they not offering public school transportation or are they? Amendment 1 supports a public charter school then what is the criteria for enrolling? There must criteria. Amendment 1 supports a public charter school then is Special Education services going to be offered? Amendment 1 supports a public charter school so how is the board selected, appointed or elected? It should be elected. WE ARE AMERICANS!!!! Amendment 1 supports a public charter school but why is the majority supporting this comes from out of State agencies? Amendment 1 supports a public charter school but who is going to pay for the buildings for this school? Amendment 1 supports a public charter school so will they have a separate splost tax? Amendment 1 supports a public charter school so why couldn't the appeals board be made up of local citizens? Amendment 1 supports a public charter school so why does this school need a separate board for governance? TOO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS TO VOTE YES.........I WOULD LIKE TO READ THE CHARTER BEFORE I VOTE. IF IT IS NOT IN WRITING PRIOR TO THE BILL PASSING THERE IS NO GUARANTEE OF WHAT A PERSON MIGHT THINK SHOULD HAPPEN.

This commission was operational from 2008-2011 and no harm came to "traditional" public schools.

Ms. Gray, I am glad you are asking questions before you vote. I have attempted to go through each of your questions and try to provide you with answers. It is very long, but there are links to answers to many of the questions you raise. You can find the page here: http://www.bartowpolitics.com/answers_to_charter_concerns.html

The majority of special education students have mild disabilities and their special services are not all that costly relatively speaking. However, if this bill passes, just wait until there is a child who has needs that costs 50-100K a year in order to receive a free appropriate public education as mandated under Federal law. I doubt that these 'for profit' charters will be willing to meet the needs of those children because it will mess up their bottom line and upset their investors. They'll have some reason as to why they aren't the 'right fit.' I've seen it happen in another community I lived in--outright discrimination.

What has local "CONTROL" provided us, but a Board controlling the Superintendent and running things any way they want? Woodland MS has historically NOT MET AYP; more years they have not then they have. Yet the same useless Principal remains in place! I can't find their AYP report for 2012, but 2010 & 2011 both failed to make AYP and put this school in a Needs Improvement status...where parents are supposed to have school choice. Yeah, right...what choice?? Public charters will provide a choice, servicing everyone. If applicants exceed available spaces, it goes to a lottery placement just like the Pre-K. Choice and competition can't do anything but raise the standards of the education our kids are getting!! We don't need the local Board controlling charters and their potential competition! They can't even control the local system with the best interest of the children!! With having the board voted in rather than appointed, it leaves that person there until their 4 yr term has passed, which is way too long when a member has ulterior, personal motives beyond what is best for the teachers and students!! Just saying....

We have camps for students who have completed grades 2-12. It's too late to participate in theRead More Middle School camp this year, but we still have openings for elementary 2-4. If you would like to send me your name and email address, I'll send you all the info and put you on my contact list. You can also go to www.thegrandtheatre.org for info.

The question: Should Georgia officially acknowledge Slavery? The reason for this: to bringRead More reconciliation among the people of this state. Now, how will that help this state achieve higher GPA's? How will that help reduce the jobless in this state? Many of us have said, we're sorry it happened, it was wrong, but NOW is not the time to spend more time/more hours on such a resolution, as AGAIN this is not the first time this has been bought up in the legislation, and before it was certainly intended to be an apology. (See HR 295-2009) but never made it to the floor. If I thought this would bring more jobs, solve the education in this state, help the poor, get all the foreclosed properties sold, then I would jump on the band wagon, but we have some very serious problems that need to be addressed, and the people of Ga. deserve more than this from an elected official. We are responding to the question that was purposed to the readers by The Patch. I do not try to change another mind, its my opinion only, but I do resent someone that openly admits they moved here from Florida, then before that lived in Europe/Cuba tell Georgians how ignorant, and stupid they are. Talking about rude, maybe you would like to apologize for calling other's names. If someone/ANYONE doesn't agree w/me and loves that this Rep has introduced a age old resolution while ignoring revelent and very real problems that exist today, that's fine, that's your perrogotive, but respect other's opinions.

Rob, Thanks for sharing the link. I think it is quite well written, and it presented someRead More historical information that I was not familiar with (i.e. Oglethorpe banned slavery in the original colony of Georgia). For me, the key justification for doing this is plainly stated in the resolution: "Whereas, while even the most abject apology cannot right the transgressions, injustices and oppressive acts of the past, the spirit of true repentance can promote reconciliation among all people and avert the repetition of past injustices for future generations." Promote reconciliation. We need to reconcile in our State where there remains a great deal of racism (visible in this thread, although the worst offender's comment has been removed). As I said earlier, I don't know how much good this will do, but it is an easy thing to do and it can't hurt. Sincerely, Alex
