Parade, Rally on Tap for King Holiday

Cartersville's organized Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, "Remember! Celebrate! Act!—A day on, not a day off," begins Sunday and continues Monday.

As government offices and businesses close to honor slain Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Bartow's MLK celebration committee has a number of public events set to remember the man and act on his legacy.

Committee Chairman Linda Ford Kellogg said four local events in King's honor are meant to celebrate what the clergyman, activist and leader represented, including service, nonviolence and unity, reported.

Now a federal and state holiday and observed on the third Monday of each January, Martin Luther King Jr. Day marks King's Jan. 15 birthday. The leader of a nonviolent movement to protest racial discrimination in federal and state law was assassinated in 1968.
