King Remembered as a Peacemaker

Cartersville's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration included the presentation of the Drum Major Award to Ruby Perdue Morgan.

Two days of celebration to remember the leader of the nonviolent Civil Rights movement culminated with a march through downtown Cartersville and following program.

Grand Marshals Rev. Horace Lee Jones and wife Judy told Martin Luther King Jr. was a peacemaker who tried to change the world for all people, not just one group.

The Bartow County committee that organizes the yearly youth rally, candlelight service, march and programs in honor of King presented Ruby Perdue Morgan with the Drum Major Award, according to the newspaper.

While 11Alive took a look at King's boyhood home in Atlanta, noting experiences that may have molded the man he became, Dallas-Hiram Patch noted , although not used an educational institution today.

Likewise, Summer Hill— a segregated school that flourished in Cartersville for four generations and produced the likes of Georgia Supreme Court Justice Robert Benham, who is set to speak tomorrow on —still stands. While it's not part of the school system, it serves educational, athletic and other needs, and includes a museum.
