Kick Off School on the Right Foot

"The benefit of Jiu-Jitsu is that it ultimately helps kids develop self discipline, self respect and most importantly, self confidence." — Chip Coffey

Let your kids kick off the school year with a fun and self-empowering experience that could benefit them for years to come.

Coffey BJJ and Fitness is offering a Kid-Jitsu program for boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 13. No prior martial arts experience is necessary for kids to enter the program.

Kid-Jitsu classes are held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at the studio located at 20 West Main Street in Cartersville’s downtown historic district.

Studio officials recommend parents bring their children in to participate in a free class before enrollment, to give the kids an opportunity to try it out and see if it’s something they’d like to pursue.

“We’ve been here for about 14 months and it’s been really great,” said studio owner Chip Coffey. “We’re big on people wanting to be here and wanting to participate, so we always want to give both children and adults the opportunity to try out the sport before they officially sign up for anything.”

Children can expect to begin each class with a word of the month, such as “respect.” Instructors will talk with the kids about what these empowerment words mean and how that can be applied to their day-to-day lives.

Coffey describes the overall class experience as structured and disciplined. After a warm-up kids will learn a technique of the day and then have the chance to spar with each other.

“We don’t push competition on any one,” said Coffey. “Starting out we like the kids to get some months under them and learn and then maybe think about competing if they really want to. We want them to build a foundation.”

Coffey feels it’s important for children to get involved in a program such as this one. The advantages of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for children reach beyond the obvious physical fitness aspect of the exercise program because it offers them a way to increase self confidence, self respect and discipline.

“Kids come in here and learn a sport all about leverage, how to be confident. This is about learning to be able to speak up for themselves,” said Coffey. “This is huge for kids. Once you have it, self-confidence is with you until the day you die.”
