Local Students Get Scholarships

Georgia Highlands College recently honored scholarship recipients and donors at a reception to celebrate 102 awards totaling $92,000.

Recently celebrating its foundation's 102 scholarship awards totaling $92,000, honored both recipients and donors in an April reception.

Named scholarships represent 79 of the awards, while another 23 students, amid personal crises and to stay in school, received emergency scholarships.

J. J. Norris of Cartersville

  • Bartow County Service Scholarship
  • Established by an anonymous bequest from a resident of Cartersville, the service scholarship requires recipients give back to the community in 80 hours of work with a nonprofit organization.

Shana Tomblin of Rydal

  • Cathryn E. Bloomfield Scholarship
  • Jon and Gail Bloomfield established this dental hygiene scholarship in memory of their daughter. It is based on academic merit, the ability to complete the program and financial need.

Steven Blume of Cartersville

  • Colin W. Shanahan Scholarship
  • Established by John and Phyllis Shanahan in memory of their son Colin.

Victoria Roach of Cartersville

  • Cook Study-Abroad Scholarship
  • Dr. Jim Cook, retired GHC history professor, began the scholarship to help finance trips for students who want to expand their education through foreign travel.

Dakota Williams of Kingston

  • David W. McCorkle National Create Society Scholarship
  • Named for the first president of Floyd College, which is now Georgia Highlands, the scholarship was initiated by the late George Wallis, and is awarded to students gifted in poetry, prose, performance or photography.

Tammara Simmons, third place, and Folusho Ayeni, fourth place, both of Cartersville

  • Follett Textbook Scholarship
  • Follett manages the bookstores on the Floyd and Cartersville campuses of GHC. The company awards $2,000 in funds for textbooks each year.

Carlette Wills of Cartersville

  • GHC Foundation Scholarship
  • Established by the foundation to help meet special needs such as tuition, fees and books so students can stay in school and graduate, the scholarship has two categories of qualification: traditional students and non-traditional students (who have typically been out of high school for five years or longer).

Elizabeth Rooks and Julie Shrewsbury, both of Cartersville

  • GHC Non-Traditional Scholarship

Kyle Blume of Cartersville

  • Jerry W. Shelton Scholarship
  • Awarded to students who demonstrate academic success and financial need, the scholarship was established by Jerry Shelton, a former GHC staff member.

Kristi McCarley of Cartersville          

  • Lesley J. Henderson Nursing Scholarship
  • Established in honor of the late Lesley Henderson, who was on the Nursing faculty at GHC, the scholarship is awarded to a student who has progressed to the second year of the program.

All scholarship recipients received the award for the current 2011-2012 academic year.

Three new scholarships awarded this year were the James D. Maddox Memorial Scholarship, established and named after a founder of the college and the father of Rebecca Maddox, director and associate professor of Nursing; the J. Randy Pierce Scholarship, honoring the recently-retired president of the college; and the Lesley Graham Nursing Scholarship.
