Local Schools Meet, Exceed State Graduation Test Scores

Cartersville City receives a 77 percent passing rate, while Bartow County gets a 73 percent.

Last week, the Georgia High School Graduation Test scores were released by the state Department of Education, and two of local high schools exceeded the state’s average score for the 2010-2011 year.

Both and had an average of 77 percent pass on all of the required subjects of the Georgia graduation test, topping over the state’s average at 73.7 percent passing by nearly 4 percent.

Cass High School and Adairsville High School, however, just fell short of meeting the state average, as Cass had only 68.6 percent passing all subjects and Adairsville had 71.4 percent.

Students must pass all four portions of the test: language arts/reading, math, science and social studies. They also must pass the Georgia High School Writing Test, which was administered separately.

This year, however, the state Board of Education recently approved phasing out of the GHSGT beginning with incoming freshman in fall 2011.

Overall, students around the state did not do as well on the test this year. For example, 14,875 students of about 93,000 first-time test-takers , which makes up about 16 percent, did not pass math this year. That compares with a 9 percent state-wide failure rate last year in math.

Social Studies seemed to be the worst subject this year for the state, with a failure rate of almost 20 percent.

That subject was a disappointment for Cartersville High School Principal Jay Floyd. He said the school teaches U.S. Government to sophomores, but is looking to change it to junior year when most school teach the course.

Science, on the other hand, was the state’s best subject with 93 percent.

So how did your school match up? Below is a break-down by percentage of passing rates on how local schools did in the four categories of the GHSGT:

Math Language Arts Social Studies Science State 84 91 80 93 Adairsville 81 89 85 95 Woodland 86 92 84 93 Cass 82 85 81 87 Cartersville 96 95 76 97
