GHC Signs Inaugural Basketball Team

Members of Georgia Highlands College's new team, including a Cartersville High School student, signed letters of intent.

Members of ’s inaugural basketball team came to the Floyd campus today to sign letters of intent for the 2012-2013 season. Recruits for the team mainly hail from the Northwest Georgia region, but the group also will include a player from New York State.  

After signing, team members met with representatives from admissions and financial aid to ensure that all requirements for enrollment had been completed. They also learned whom their roommates will be, and listened to Coach Phil Gaffney describe their workout regimen for the summer. 

The team includes Matt Catanzano from Armuchee High School, Vantrail Commings from Douglas County High School, Seth Curlee from in Cartersville, JR Davis from , Rashon Dumas from Chattahoochee High School in Johns’ Creek, Damon Mitchell from Marietta High School, Femi Ojuolape from Lithia Springs High School, Dimychael Ross and Cody Washington from Allatoona High School, Neil Shah from North Cobb High School and  Matt Welch from New York Mills High School.

Gaffney said the players all look strong. 

“We’ve assembled what I believe will be a very solid team,” he said. “But sports isn’t our only focus.  We are also committed to academics, and one of our goals is to retain and graduate or transfer all our players, so we’ll be monitoring academic performance as well.”

Some of the team members are well known in their communities. 

Matt Catanzano holds Armuchee’s record for three-point baskets, both for the season (85) and over his high-school career (210). JR Davis of Cartersville High School was named co-player of the year for Region 7-AAA. Femi Ojuolape led his Lithia Springs team to a Region 5-AAAA championship.  Vantrail Commings from Douglas County High School was named Region 5-AAAA Player of the Year. And Neil Shah of North Cobb led his team to a Region 4-AAAAA championship.

GHC’s basketball season opens Nov 1. 

Georgia Highlands is part of the Georgia College Athletic Association of the National Junior College Athletics Association.
