Are Teens Giving Up on Facebook?

Survey finds Facebook no longer the most important social media site for teenagers.

A new survey finds that Facebook is no longer the most important social network for teenagers.

Piper Jaffray found in its semi-annual report on the habits of American teens that Facebook's popularity among teens has dropped from 42 percent to 23 percent since last fall.

While Facebook has 10 times the number of teen users, Instagram is now just as important to them. Ironically, Facebook owns Instagram.

Twitter ranks as the most important for teens, according to the survey, but its popularity has actually dropped 4 percent since the spring.

So what's going on with teens? They are still signed up for Facebook but exploring -- and using -- other social networks more often. Check out this chart on Most Important Social Media Sites for Teens.

Pew Research Report in the spring found that teens consider Facebook a "social burden" because of its size, privacy issues and the "drama" that often comes from using it. Facebook chairman Mark Zuckerberg has insisted that teens are still very much involved the site.
