Poll: Choice to 'Make the Grade'?

More than two dozen turned out to talk education in a Cartersville town hall meeting last night, discussing charter and private schools, home schooling and online education, The Daily Tribune News reports.

The meeting with State Sen. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, and State Rep. Christian Coomer, R-Cartersville, included a screening of Americans for Prosperity's film "Making The Grade In Georgia: Educational Freedom & Justice for All."

The 30-minute mini documentary explains current school and student performance in Georgia, which ranks 48th in the nation in education, and discusses educational options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, virtual learning, private schools, hybrid schools and home schools, interviewing experts, principals, teachers and students to various angles of the school choice issue, says its website.

The coalition, including Americans for Prosperity, the Georgia Charter Schools Association and the Georgia Public Policy Foundation, wants parents to have more choices for educating their children, from traditional schools to various alternative programs. Coomer added they're working to balance governmental powers in Georgia following a state Supreme Court court ruling that charter schools are unconstitutional, according to the newspaper.
