Bartow County Helps Newt Take GA
Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich got an overwhelming majority of local votes in the party's primary with Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney second and third.

More than 19 percent of Bartow County's cast ballots in the presidential primary and overwhelmingly chose Republican candidate Newt Gingrich, who was shortly after the polls closed.
With 6,123 votes, Gingrich was the pick on 56.45 percent of the 10,847 Republican ballots cast in Bartow. Rick Santorum got 2,051 local votes for 18.91 percent, followed by Mitt Romney at 17.83 percent with 1,934 votes.

With a total of 11,115 votes in the election, 268 of which went to President Barack Obama, and fell under a late-day .Β
In the 2008 presidential primary, nearly 40 percent of registered Bartow voters cast ballots, with about 63 percent of those in the Republican primary.

Almost 98 percent of local voters who cast ballots today chose a Republican candidate, but unlike 2008, Obama is the only contender in the Democratic primary.
