Mohawk Industries is expanding its Summerville manufacturing operation in Chattooga County, about an hour northwest of Cartersville.

Gov. Nathan Deal in an announcement today said the Calhoun-based company that in 2010 closed its Cartersville plant, laying off more than 200 workers, anticipates adding about 500 Summerville jobs throughout the next five years.

“Mohawk is one of Georgia’s flagship Fortune 500 companies, and we are pleased to see its continued investments in our state leading to the creation of meaningful jobs in Summerville and other communities,” Deal said in a release. “This expansion is a great indicator of the resilience of the carpet and floor covering industry. Mohawk has Georgia’s full support for its continued investments in our state.”

In Summerville, Mohawk recycles billions of reclaimed plastic bottles and containers into polyester fiber used to produce carpet. With the expansion project, it will improve the efficiencies of its recycling and manufacturing processes to produce more fiber.

The market for polyester carpet continues to grow significantly, and its investment will allow Mohawk to expand its capacity to meet consumer demand.

The initial phase of the expansion is expected to be operational in 2013, said Mark Dye, Mohawk’s vice president of recycling.
