Manufacturers Appreciation Week Set

Bartow County Commissioner Clarence Brown and the mayors of cities in Bartow, including Cartersville Mayor Matt Santini, signed the proclamation dedicating April 25 to 29.

Celebrated in Cartersville and the state, Manufacturers Appreciation Week is meant to show appreciation to local industries and their employees.

At his public meeting, Commissioner Clarence Brown, along with Cartersville Mayor Matt Santini and other mayors in Bartow County, signed a proclamation dedicating the week.

The Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce is set to host events, such as industry tours and an appreciation breakfast, throughout the week.

Scheduled for Tuesday are TI Automotive and Gerdau Ameristeel and for Thursday are Anheuser-Busch and Americo Manufacturing. Local manufacturers are encouraged to participate.

The week ends with a Friday breakfast at which Gretchen Corbin, deputy commissioner of global commerce for the Georgia Department of Economic Development, will present the 2011 Manufacturer of the Year Awards. The breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. at the .

In regular business, the commissioners:

• Approved Sunbelt Structures to replace a bridge on Johnson Mountain Road for $163,841.

• Decided to apply for a $260,532 grant for transit.

• Reappointed Jarrod Roberts to the Board of Tax Assessors and Tony Tidwell to the Housing and Development Corp.

• Appointed Matt Schultz to the Highland Rivers Community Mental Health Mental Health Retardation and Substance Abuse Service Board.

• Declared 1.847 acres on Barnsley Garden Road as not intended for county use. It had been given to the county for a fire station, but officials chose another location. The property will be quit-claimed to the grantor, David Green.

• Entered an agreement for the to take over a pump station at and Ryals-Davis Farm because of the bankruptcy of Carter Grove.

• Entered an understanding with the Water Planning District for a toilet retrofit program, which will allow residents to apply for rebates for ultra-low-flush and water-efficient upgrades.

• Authorized Fire Chief Craig Millsap to require a two-year agreement from volunteer firefighters. Millsap said many volunteers use the county training program as a catalyst to gain employment and discountinue volunteering.

• Approved Langley's Lawn Care to mow grass and control vegetation at county water facilities.

• Declared some county property surplus and authorized its sale.

• Approved malt beverage licenses for Beer Garden and Fast Food and Fuel.

• Approved the rezoning of 2.1 acres across from the airport to C-1 from A-1.
