Decatur High Renovation May Eliminate 'Spaceship' Entrance

Decatur School Board's plans call for putting a classroom building in that part of the school.

The highly recognizable "spaceship" entrance to Decatur High School may be torn down to build more classroom space.

The school's circular library is above the entrance, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The article said,

Decatur school board chairman Marc Wisniewski said the board reviewed plans for additional classrooms at Renfroe Middle and Decatur High during a recent work session, adding that “everything is conceptual at this point.”

The Decatur High plans call for a classroom building in front, thus removing the distinctive circular library, often called “the spaceship." An enlarged cafeteria and new gym would be built in back, with construction coming in phases through 2018. Plans will be presented on Feb. 5.

That part of the high school was constructed in the mid-1960s. Next Stop ... Decatur has posted some drawings of the school design from the 1960s.

Didn't they just finish a new gym at the ugh school and redid the whole playing field?

Monty, I am trying to get an answer to that question.

I've seen pictures of the new gym, and it looks great. For a school that size, I'm surprised they only have one gym. I attended a small public high school in another state and we had two gyms. We had boys and girls' high school sports teams in both of them all the time, particularly in the winter, with freshman, junior varsity and varsity basketball and wrestling practices, as well as community youth teams and events.

The Old "Decatur Girls High School building" which once stood on that spot was "One Beautiful Old Building" I don't know who approved tearing it down, but that was "One Big Mistake" I have been looking at "that butt ugly building" that's there now for too long. It's time to "tear 'er down boys". Spend some of our gosh awful high tax revenue and put something there that we can be proud of once again. School Board, approve something beautiful and build it.
