Tuesday: Our Night Out Against Crime

Cartersville police and local businesses are holding a National Night Out event Tuesday from 6 to 9:30 p.m. to promote crime prevention and neighborhood safety.

Participating in a national program designed to strengthen police-community partnerships and heighten crime prevention awareness, and local businesses are teaming up to offer a public event Tuesday from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

To be held in Target's parking lot, Cartersville's National Night Out "is a local effort to promote child safety, neighborhood safety, strengthen partnerships between the community and the police, and send a message to criminals that our citizens are organized against them," according to the press release.

"There will be a safety village set up to teach children about street safety, [and participants can] experience driving under the influence in our driving simulator," the release states, adding there will be a moon walk for children, and food and other vendors selling safety products.

National Night Out was introduced by nonprofit National Association of Town Watch in 1984 as a way to heighten awareness and strengthen participation in local anti-crime efforts.
