Speak Out: Sheriff's New Crime Prevention Unit

Sheriff Clark Millsap yesterday launched a new Bartow County Sheriff's Office unit aimed at combating street crime.

The Sheriff's Crime Prevention Unit, or SCPU for short, initially consists of two uniformed deputies assigned to concentrate on areas in which crime has or is likely to occur. Deputies Anthony Parker and Nathan Gifford drive specially-marked patrol cars as they complete special assignments around the county, Millsap said in a release.

"This unit is going to work closely with the Criminal Investigations Unit and Drug Task Force to target crime on the streets," Millsap added.

Millsap said SCPU uses some of the latest technology to fight crime and exchange information with others in the law enforcement community as efficiently and accurately as possible.

"Deputies are assigned to the newly-formed unit and will be using intelligence information from investigations and other sources to locate and stop crime in our neighborhoods and communities," the release says. "Along with the technology in place, the two have attended courses to develop skills needed to identify and target the criminal element and will attend more classes in the future."
