Police: Parkway North Standoff Ends in Surrender

Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident at a Cartersville motel, in which witnesses reported a man had fired shots at two people.

A standoff that ensued after a report of shots fired at a local extended-stay motel ended peacefully, when two suspects surrendered, Cartersville police said in a release.

Witnesses told officers responding about 7 p.m. to a call of shots fired at Parkway North that a man had shot at two people and he and another person were inside one of the apartments.

Following an evacuation of residents from nearby apartments, a standoff and the arrival of SWAT officers, the men—Jesse Tyler Sanderson, 28, and William Donald Garland, 34, both of Cartersville—opened the door about 8:40 p.m. and surrendered to police.

"We are all pleased that this situation was resolved peacefully," Chief Tommy Culpepper said in the release. "Officers responded appropriately and handled this tense situation in a very professional manner."

Although witnesses said the men had multiple weapons, police found only a dismantled 20-gauge shotgun in the motel room.

Both men were taken to police headquarters for processing and later transported to the Bartow County jail where they're being held on felony charges, but the investigation continues.

Sanderson was charged with felony obstruction of police, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Garland was charged with being a party to a crime and felony obstruction.
