Several witnesses saw two men suspected of robbing a downtown Cartersville law firm and beating an attorney with a pistol when their car wouldn’t start, Lt. Mark Camp said a press conference.

“When these two entered the business, they were wearing masks so we don’t know at what point they took the masks off when they fled the building,” he said. “We do know they tried to get into a car around the side of the building. The car didn’t start and thankfully, that’s what delayed their escape.

“When the car wouldn’t start, they fled on foot so that’s what helped the witnesses identify the subjects and what they were wearing.”

About two blocks from the law office, an East Main Street walk-up between and , police apprehended Ray Anthony Montgomery, 22, of Cartersville, at a business on Leake Street. Charges against him are pending.

Camp said at least one firearm was involved in the alleged robbery, and police recovered a pistol from the car.

Montgomery and Derrick Christopher Williams, also know as "Derric," a 22-year-old Cartersville resident, are suspected of assaulting and robbing John Lewis, a local businessman who owns several properties, then fleeing the office with two bank bags.

“[Lewis] appears to be OK, all things considered. He was able to walk to the ambulance, but he did take what appeared to be a pretty significant injury to the head,” Chief Tommy Culpepper said.

The private legal practice specializes in family law, bankruptcy, labor law, personal injury, insurance, criminal defense and government law.

Police are still looking for Williams, following up on leads and searching various locations, Culpepper added.

He is African-American man last seen wearing a tan T-shirt and dark-colored blue jeans and is between 5-foot-10-inches and 6-foot tall and weighs 150 to 170 pounds.

“It’s pretty bold that time of day to go into an office like that. It’s a pretty violent act, obviously, because he injured the individual, but in the middle of the day when there’s plenty of people to see you leave the building, the chance of getting away ‘Scott-free’ is reduced greatly.

"Bad timing. To be honest with you, that’s what makes criminal acts is bad choices."

Culpepper did not released information on the contents of the bank bags and said investigators haven’t determined a “true motive” for the alleged robbery and beating.

Authorities have encountered Montgomery in the past, and say he has a criminal record.

If you see Williams or have information on his whereabouts, call at police at 770-382-2526.
