Acworth Woman Struck by Car

A 51-year-old Acworth woman was struck by a car and killed Monday night after she fell in the crosswalk of Georgia 92 and Wade Green Road.

About 10:30 p.m. Monday, 51-year-old Melanie June Mayes was crossing Georgia 92 when she fell, Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said in a news release.

Detectives with the  have determined that Jason Cole, 43, took Elijah Cole "from house to house staying in different locations since last Thursday, kept his child from attending school for three days, is suspected of being on a drug binge during that time and has not provided adequate amounts of food to the boy," Lt. Jay Baker said Tuesday evening.

Two Smyrna Businesses Busted for Illegal Gambling

More than 20 people have been arrested after investigators conducted two illegal gambling busts at and .

Marietta Daily Journal reported that three Howard’s Deli employees were arrested after they allegedly used cash payments from registers to award electronic gambling winners. The arrests came as the result of a four-month-long sting operation conducted by the Marietta/Cobb/Smyrna Narcotics and Intelligence Unit.

“You can’t pay out in cash rewards,” said Cobb Police Public Information Officer Dana Pierce. “You and I could play chip poker all day long, but when we start laying money on the table is when it becomes illegal.”

Tech Student Indicted on Online Sex Charges

A fifth year mechanical engineering student at Georgia Tech has been indicted on 25 counts of online sex in Dougherty County.

Atlanta police arrested Adam Morse, 22, in early June after investigators say the Meldrim, Ga., native sent two dozen pornographic pictures of himself and lots of sexually explicit conversation messages to whom he thought was a 13-year-old girl, but was in fact a member of the Dougherty County Police Internet Crimes Against Children team.
