Man Was Shot by Deputies Four Times

An officer-involved shooting last week left the suspect wounded, but he is now in jail.

The man wounded by deputies involved in a foot chase was booked into the Bartow County and charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, disorderly conduct and fleeing or attempting to elude police.

Jason Keith Hansard, 31, of Sweetbriar Circle in Cartersville, allegedly fled in a truck from deputies responding to a burglary in progress call, then led deputies on a foot chase. He allegedly was armed with a "large knife."

Sheriff Clark Millsap said his dispatchers had received several calls complaining Hansard had brandished a knife and threatened people with it. Authorities believe he was under the influence of some hallucenogic drug, such as methamphetamine.

Shortly before deputies spotted Hansard's vehicle, a caller told dispatchers he was on the family's lawn and she believed he was trying to break in the home.

Following the foot chase, Millsap said Hansard lunged at two deputies holding the knives, which he refused to put down. Deputies used a Taser, pepper spray and bean bag rounds to try to subdue Hansard, but when those efforts failed, he was shot four times.

Also prior to the chase, Hansard is accused of stealing $45 in gas.

Millsap said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is expected Monday to wrap up its probe into the officer-involved shooting.
