Fire Spreads, Affects Travel, Again

Highway 41 and other area roads were closed down a second time Sunday after the fire rekindled.

Be prepared for heavy smoke and possible travel delays, as the fires that are back. About 11:30 a.m., crews were dispatched to Highway 41 near Enterprise Oil.

They quickly shut down Highway 41, both north and south, and reported fire on both sides of the road. Traffic is being routed to Interstate 75.

An emergency responder reporting the blaze was spreading quickly toward South Bridge Drive, crews began shutting down portions of Peachtree and not allowing traffic into the area from South Tennessee Street. That traffic is being sent to Highway 293, which is itself charred from Saturday's events.

The cause of the fires are unknown, although firefighters say it could have resulted from a lit cigarette being thrown from a car window in current dry conditions. As of Saturday, officials did not believe the blazes were related to a on Interstate 75.

The wind is more than likely responsible for rekindling Sunday areas left smoldering all night. Forestry crews plowed breaks Saturday and returned Sunday to help firefighters control the blaze.

Georgia Department of Transportation also assisted by placing signs diverting traffic around the area. Hundreds of acres burned Saturday, and the fire was reportedly moving toward Cartersville on Sunday.
