Homes Leveled, Traumatic Injuries and Entrapments

An apparent tornado ripped through homes, trapping and injuring residents, just north of Cartersville in the Cassville area.

While the city of Cartersville seemed to fair well through the thunderstorms and tornadoes, it’s a different story just north of the city toward Cassville and Pine Log.

Chris Moseley, assistant to the director of the Bartow County Emergency Management Agency, said the area between Highway 293 and Griffin Road, across Highway 41 between Cass-White Road and Cedar Creek Road and to Highway 140 was “hit really bad” with multiple structures either destroyed or damaged, entrapments and traumatic injuries.

Police scanner reports indicate rescue crews are working to gain access to those areas, including Crowe Springs, Dogwood, Griffin, Law, Kirk and Spring Place, due to numerous downed trees and power lines.

Reports of traumatic injuries include a crushed hand and a man who had pain in several areas of his body due to a tree falling on him. Rescuers also were told of an elderly couple on Mansfield who sustained possibly serious injuries. A second report from Mansfield was from a woman who said she was bleeding heavily.

A short time ago, rescue personnel were preparing to go into Dana Way on foot and walk residents out because they could not access the neighborhood via vehicles.

Moseley said Bartow County Fire Chief Craig Millsap reported there were houses “obliterated” and “gone” in the area.

Atlanta news outlets are also reporting trees are blocking Interstate 75 both directions after Cass-White Road. The latest information from Georgia Power is 5,600 customers are without power in Cartersville.

Meanwhile, Cartersville Fire Department officials are working to send firefighters to northern parts of Georgia, which also have been hit hard by tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. City fire officials reported no damage in Cartersville.
