Fire Officials to Businesses: Check Your Connections

Local fire and police officials say businesses are experiencing brass connections thefts.

Local firefighters say thieves are targeting for scrap a part that could save lives and property in the event of a fire.

"In these hard economic times there has been an increase in thefts of all kinds.  Everyone is aware of the huge problem with copper thefts but the latest problem seems to be aimed at brass, specifically fire department connections for fire sprinkler systems," a press release states. "These connections are easy targets but could come with a real price for the unsuspecting occupants of these buildings."

Without connections, firefighters can't supplement a fire sprinkler system with water from fire trucks. That could be a serious problem if a fire exceeds the sprinkler system capability, resulting in the total loss of a structure or worse, the injury or death of the occupants.
