Updated, 10:10 p.m.

The clean up under way and interstate expected to open back up in a short time, authorities identified Scott Edward Thurmon, 54, of Kennesaw, as the driver killed in the crash. His F-350 pick-up truck hit the left side of the tractor-trailer at the fuel tank, which caused a fire, Wright said.

Original Report

One person was killed and another injured in a fiery crash that has closed Interstate 75 in Cartersville, spokesman Gory Wright said shortly before 6 p.m.

Troopers are working the crash at mile marker 290, where both a Ford F-350 and the tractor-trailer it hit head on caught fire. Wright said the Ford was northbound, but crossed over, striking the southbound big rig.

The driver of the F-350 was killed. The tractor-trailer driver sustained burns on his upper body, but is expected to survive.

The interstate remains closed going south.

Any interstate highway, particularly I-75 is a dangerous place on its best day. Massive amounts of four wheel and eighteen wheel traffic just a few feet apart couple with the ever present chance that a driver will text, get otherwise distracted, sneeze, have a psychotic episode or a heart attack. Any of these episodes can mean tragedy.not only for the one having them but for others as well. I-75 is a dangerous place. Drive carefully.

You make it sound like its the tractor trailer drivers fault in most cases. They are some of the best drivers out there.

We were unexpectedly caught in the I-75 shut down last night after leaving a wedding in the Chattanooga area and trying to return home. While it's frustrating to be stuck in non-moving or creeping traffic for hours, it's always a time to think about why the interstate is shut down (usually a traffic fatality) and send up a quick prayer for the families involved.

I've seen it everyday somebody driving and doing something else while they are driving instead of paying attention to the task at hand, the other day I seen a young woman sitting behind the wheel with 2 kids in the back just texting away and not paying attention to her driving, put the phones down people are dying because of that, its just plain stupid to operate a ph while driving, so quit being stupid people
