Drugs, Paraphernalia Found in Student's Backpack

The older brother of the Cartersville Primary School student was arrested after marijuana and a white powder were discovered.

The older brother of a Cartersville Primary School student was arrested today after teachers found suspicious items in a backpack.

Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap and Cartersville Police Department Chief Tommy Culpepper said Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force agents Friday arrested Cecil Lavon Burton Jr., 21, of Old Mill Road in Cartersville, on a reckless endangerment of a child charge and others are pending.      

DTF Commander Capt. Mark Mayton said agents were called to the school by the a resource officer after faculty members found suspicious items commonly used in the illegal drug trade, along with marijuana and an unknown white powder.

Agents who spoke with the student’s parent determined the source may have been the student's older brother. After talking with Burton, agents arrested him and alerted the Department of Family and Children Services.       

Agents continue to follow information gathered during the investigation and expect more charges and possibly more arrest in the near future.
