Bartow County sheriff's officials on the department's Facebook page released this statement on the case:

"On Saturday evening deputies responded to a reported animal cruelty case near Kingston. After their investigation, deputies determined that there was no intent to harm the animal. While this is a very tragic and horrible case, no arrest was made due to the facts surrounding the incident."

Original Report

A dog in Kingston was dragged to its death Saturday after its owner forgot he tied the animal to his truck's trailer hitch.

The owner of the 1977 GMC Sierra, who said he had tied the dog to the back of his truck after it had gotten loose earlier, asked another man to go to the Dollar General in Kingston to buy bread, according to the Bartow County Sheriff's Office incident report.

The driver went to the West Howard Street store about 7:45 p.m. and was checking out when someone yelled for him to come outside.

A crowd had gathered around the dog, which was "tied to the trailer hitch, lying in the parking lot and bleeding severely," according to the report. The driver said he wasn't aware the dog was tied to the truck.

He "stated a large crowd began to gather around him with everyone yelling and screaming at him so...he picked up the dog, set him in the bed of the truck and drove back to the residence," a deputy reported.

The owner of the truck told police he had tied his dog to the truck before he started cooking dinner and forgot about the dog until the other man returned from the Dollar General.

Authorities noted the dog had severe road rash and lacerations.

A 911 caller had spotted the truck on the road and called to report the dog was being pulled behind.

No charges were filed in the case due to the "information provided and the circumstances," a deputy wrote in the report, noting two other dogs at the home, which appeared to be healthy and had shelter, food and water.
