Couple Injured In Accident Recovering From Wounds

The Cartersville couple who were struck by a driver who allegedly ran a red light were flown to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga for extensive treatment.

The man and woman who were injured in an accident while driving to church Sunday morning are on the mend.

Capt. Mark Camp, public affairs officer with the Cartersville Police Department, said both victims had to be airlifted to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga Sunday evening. They were initially transported by Cartersville Medical Center for treatment.

The man, Joseph William Thompson, had to have emergency surgery to repair the artery in his arm. On Wednesday, Thompson went under the knife again to repair the bones in his arm.

The female victim, Barbara Thompson, has a fractured sternum in two places, and remains hospitalized.

At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, a Dodge Neon was traveling north on Highway 41 when the driver — Theresa Larose Arroyo of Cedartown — allegedly ran the red light, and struck a Nissan Pathfinder as it was turning left onto Highway 41 from Grassdale Road.

A witness, who was sitting at the red light at the intersection, said the Neon ran the red light and struck the Pathfinder. The Dodge Neon bounced off the Pathfinder, and struck the witness's vehicle, a 2002 Ford F-150.

The driver and passenger of the Pathfinder, Joseph William Thompson and Barbara Thompson, respectively, were both treated at Cartersville Medical Center before they were flown to the Chattanooga hospital for extensive treatment.

Capt. Camp said Arroyo, who refused to provide officers with a statement, remains hospitalized at Floyd Medical Center, and the case remains under investigation.
